part of being head diplomat of a whole country is that you got to work with people you don’t like to keep peoples jobs in the UK so they can put food on the table, burning everythig down feels good in the short term but medium and long term, it will not.

If there’s a full-scale war between american and iran. Are we gonna see another 2001 Tony blair situation. All due respect, I don’t want the U.K. to get involved with the americans. J.D. Vance disrespected our veterans/ soldiers. Keep UK out plz.

Completely torn on my opinion on this action. Trump is a moron, not fit for office and undeniably should be in prison let alone POTUS. Should Iran be allowed to develop nuclear weapons ? absolutely not. Is Israel committing war crimes and threatening world peace ? Yes. What evidence is there that Iran was developing nuclear weapons ? How can Trump make this decision without due process/congress approval etc ?

  4. do the independent think starmer loves trump to bits? labour was actively supporting and communicating with the dems across the lead up to the US election (within legal margins unlike what orange says). no matter what you think about him, i think starmers overall approach to trump has been commendable.

  5. I don’t think Starmer wants us to think the best of Trump, he just wants us to not hate that he has to kowtow to his shenanigans.

Why is the mainstream media pretending that politics is black and white?

Oh that’s right because in doing so they can paint Starmer on a bad light.

Or maybe, Starmer just has no respect from the current US administration.

It really isn’t surprise that Trump is just completely overlooking the EU and the UK with foreign policy issues.

These are politicians who can’t even fix their own countries issues. JD Vance already has had to speak out against there anti free speech policies.

Lucy Connelly getting less time in prison than literal foreign rapists for a tweet that was up for a few hours.

Starmer could stick a million pounds in my bank account to sway me to like Trump and I’d still think he was a tangerine spunk trumpet.

  9. That is one hell of a way of saying Starmer lies to us about his opinions of Trump’s intentions.

  10. Starmer is at best being overpolite. And orange messiah is not helping. Matter of fact he couldn’t give a flying f about it.

  11. The tactic every democratic leader should be adopting is the same as Canada’s right now.

Be polite , try to find common ground, and diversify into other markets and try and get mutual beneficial deals going with your real allies around the globe to lower your reliance and interaction with America and the path it’s on.

Trump has no respect for Starmer, he told him he wasn’t going to strike Iran then did it 2 days later, he deliberately dropped the trade deal documents to force Starmer to get on his knees in front of him to pick them up and I believe Starmer was never actually told the US was about to bomb Iran but found out because the RAF informed him B2’s with fighter escorts were passing them

Trump had respect for Boris Johnston, he’s made that clear time and time again, he sees Starmer as a coward

  13. This pretend love of trump is at least better than the resounding praise from the last rotating door of suck ups at no.10

As time goes on though, there’s less reason to love the choice of stroking the ego of a despot Russian asset

I highly recommend Rory stewart’s comments at the end of his podcast with Alistair Campbell about this situation. And they are best placed to talk about it having been intimately involved with the failures in Iraq.

Starmer is a lawyer and supposed to be all about following the rule of law

All these European leaders that were warning of grave consequences of a result of the actions undertaken in the early hours by US, suddenly when it’s happened have been like oh it’s okay.

Then the UN has entirely lost its purpose then. If any action can be handwaved unilaterally as a pre emptive defence while not being imminently pre emptive (is it 2 weeks or 12 months?) then the post 1945 consensus on laws and treaties to stop world wars has stopped working.

Russia can feel further emboldened by how the US has dealt with Iran for Israel. It’s had its own “pre emptive” in Ukraine.

China can know it will give the fordow excuse when it goes for Taiwan or for any south china sea disputed island

Rory is right. We haven’t gone back to pre world war 1. We’ve gone back to pre treaty of Westphalia

It’s just might is right now. The big countries can overtly bully the smaller ones and there’s no redress whatsoever.

And before reform types jump to “UN never worked anyway”, it did actually it reduced a lot of conflict from being multi country by adding friction to the process with treaties and meetings and sanctions and all these things to stop it being a free for all

  15. Really?

*Obviously* he doesn’t actually think the best of Trump, he’s saying what he can to keep America happy and the people of this country out of the firing line.

Has everyone got very stupid in the last five or ten years or something? Is a reputable paper *actually* taking the line that because the leader of the country played along with someone with power over him, he must be secretly stupid and/or collaborating?

  16. anybloodythingwilldo on

I don’t think anyone but diehard supporters actually think the best of Trump.  Starmer just walks a tightrope of trying not to cause a tantrum.  In reality I’m 100% sure Starmer thinks he’s a colossal idiot.

  17. Buck_Slamchest on

Personally, I think Starmer has played him like a fiddle. He clearly realises what the Mango Mussolini needs to keep him ‘workable’, let’s say, so he gives it to him.

  18. Cynical_Classicist on

Starmer is living in a different world. He thinks that just giving Trump everything that he wants is the best way forward. At this rate if Trump invaded Canada, Starmer would be saying that just giving him half would be reasonable and that he could be trusted with more American living space.

  19. Thesalutaryhaptic on

Starmer is just an arse licker. He didn’t think Trump wd win, played to the people, trump gets in, etc
    Odious!

Nobody is surprised that a UK Prime Minister is trying to get onside with POTUS, right?

  21. Past_Humor8321 on

Thank God there is such a place called Damnation where warmongers will go to for eternity.

  22. I don’t think Starmer has ever asked anyone to think the best of Trump. He’s just tried to be diplomatic.

It’s very easy for others to call on Starmer to take a stand against Trump or make a statement condemning his actions. But part of being a PM is engaging in diplomacy with everyone, regardless of whether you like them or not.

Burning bridges with the volatile leader of the most powerful country in the world doesn’t do us any favours.
