I got the data for this chart from Kpler and [TankerTrackers.com](http://TankerTrackers.com) and then I used PlotSet to render this infographic.

Venezuela buying oil is kinda sad

Venezuela is so horribly mismanaged it hurts, they’re making Iran look good in comparison.
They have worlds biggest oil reserves, more than Saudi Arabia and they’re buying oil from Iran. Because they never invest money into processing their own properly.

5% of Venezuela in 2025 looks much less than 4% of Japan 2017

This is actually one of the dynamics Anne Applebaum talks about in Authocracy Inc., that is Authocracies supporting each others to sidestep the negative consequences of sanctions and keep their buddy dictators in power.

I can’t be the only one bugged by how that little sliver on the 2025 diagram is clearly not 5%, right?

Why would Venezuela be buying Iranian oil? Isn’t Venezuela a failed economy with a gas station attached itself?

What this is really missing is the non-exports. Oil that they refine is typically used domestically. Recent targeting of their refinery capacity could be interesting if it makes them export more oil AND have to import refined products.

Without the total produced it feels sort of meaningless. Iran could be making a lot less as far as this is concerned.

China is also leading the green energy investments. That’s a pretty bad outlook for Iran.

Yeah but how much is it? Has Iran increased its oil export? decreased it?

So basically, just like the Russia Ukraine war, China will be able to buy Iranian oil for Pennies on the dollar like they did with Russian oil?

Big question with this is, what is the output? Sure you have what percentage of oil is being exported, but how many barrels are actually being exported?
