Reading the article it is frustrating to see that the “expert” opinion is to make alcohol more expensive, with nothing to say about increasing support for alcoholics and making it easier to access detox services. I can say with some certainty increasing the price of alcohol won’t deter alcoholics; they will simply spend less money on everything else (and I say this because I’ve been there).

There isn’t a doubt in my mind they’ll come for alcohol the way they did tobacco.

    3. Drinking is widely accepted, meanwhile smoking is vilified and costs £2bn a year.

    4. I’m convinced this figure would decrease considerably if cannabis was legalised.

I for one am excited for our zero sum overlords.

      Alcohol is bad.

      Smoking is bad

      Eating meat is bad.

Flying to go on holiday is bad

      Driving is bad.

Sitting for too long watching the TV is bad.

Go to work and go home do absolutely nothing fun other than go for your government approved walk citizen.

Because if it negatively affects your health it’s banned.

Haven’t had alcohol for over two years now and I honestly don’t miss it.

    7. Funny how it’s not to decentivise binge drinking or helping alcoholics. No! It’s make those who are completely addicted help pay for the massive fuck ups made be an incompetent and greedy government

Personally not a fan of alcohol because my liver is genetically screwed and easily prone to cancer even if i don’t abuse substances or food.

But goddamn man… first time went on holiday in Turkey all inclusive hotel very expensive 5 star. I expected to see people here that are not bottom lf the barrel considering the price.

But damn i was surprised to see the amount of uneducated british people that abuse alcohol like crazy. Most of them do at least, drink like there’s no tomorrow and act in embarrassing ways with no respect towards others.

Tonight i realised that they are okay with the high price because it allows them to drink tons of alcohol without paying.

In Spain I’ve been at a hotel that did half board only and you had to pay for alcohol. So because it was expensive all of those people took all the noise and lack of respect to local pubs away from me. It was bliss.

This is the 7th night in a row when i can’t get a proper sleep because of the noise they make… Tomorrow i am finally going home. Yaaay..

I don’t understand what is so great about drinking alcohol, do they know you can have fun without it too?

The government should make alcohol illegal. I know it won’t work. I just want them to be consistent

Like all chemical dependencies the route is in a dissatisfaction with oneself and one’s life, if you want to make a dent in these numbers you have to address why it’s going on. Improving people’s lives in real terms is the only way to tackle this kind of thing long term.

The problem is alcohol abuse is so ingrained in British social culture that at this stage it’s almost an impossible task, it’s the acceptable face of addiction and I would surmise there are far more functioning alcoholics out there than we suspect.
