Considering how this Labour government are, even if they’re probably not going to anything about it, I’m just glad that they didn’t misinterpret “Stop Killing Games” and decide to ban all “violent video games”

Don’t you even fucking think about it, Starmer! I’ve waited over a decade to play GTA 6, and I’ve only got a year to wait!

What the fuck is this petition even about? I keep seeing people posting about it on other subs I have no idea what it is

  3. Sensitive_Echo5058 on

Ok, this is not what I expected.

Not about secret squid games or fox hunting, or even a stop to the production of violent video games.

Simply, just gamers who want to play their video games without worry developers will withdraw support or shut down online platforms.

UK petitions are pointless, the website only exists to make people think they can do something and the government always shrugs them off, and when they do get debated in parliament rarely does anyone turn up.

The EU one at least has some weight in that the commission is legally required to look into it and discuss it with the submitters.

  5. Imagine purchasing a bluray with some online content that is optional on it but five years later you can no longer watch that bluray because it can’t communicate with a server that no longer exists.  It’s a silly example but essentially this is what is happening with games.

Again, whilst this is still likely to result in the Gov coming back with a similar answer as what was already given (which was pretty shit) this gets it on record. Then you pair up with the current success of the EU campaign and how well that one is doing. There’s some hope this can lead to something happening in the future.

Be it a case of it becoming EU law and the UK deciding to follow suit like it does for a lot of these kinds of laws that will transcend borders anyway. Or a case of the EU law changing and most devs just implement the changes globally anyway.

Yeah that is what really need, MP’s who are utterly clueless about the subject making stupid decisions….

Thankfully they will spend 30 seconds on it and all will be forgotten.

  8. Tbh, these petitions are useless. But I do think the UK should mirror and work together with the EU to fix this issue. Those who are actually passionate about this topic should write to their MP and tell them so

  9. It’s already been thrown out, since under current laws it would be too difficult to implement.

  10. This isn’t a parliament thing, the consumer controls the market. If you stop buying it, then they’ll stop doing it.

god fuck I don’t trust parliament for a single second to give even one reasonable take on video games

I was aware there was a EU petition. Wasn’t aware there was a UK one. It would be nice if petitions did result in something sometimes, but mostly just is a “Yeah we’ve discussed it and decided to ignore it”

The Debate: “Whiny gamers are moaning about games being switched off or some old bollocks.
Do we give a solitary shit?”
    * in unison * “Nay”

“Great. Down the pub for an early lunch it is then”

Even though I signed it, it’s utterly pointless..

  14. We can all thank Pirate Games for being a twat. 🤣 Nothing rally people like hate – the number of big YouTubers that made videos about him hating this – instant win.

Fuck yeah. I don’t care if petitions are pointless, this is a huge win and I’ll be emailing my MP to see if I can help provide more info and sway his position. And all of you should as well. Stop letting pessimism prevent you from talking to your MP and TRYING to change things.

I’ve never been sympathetic to the games industry.

Anything else on the planet you buy, houses, cars, furniture, art, clothes, toys, you name it. You are the owner of these items, you purchased it and you can give it away, loan it or sell it again as you see fit.

The games industry however has always hard a problem.

First it was buying, selling, part exchange of used games. Their argument was that they didn’t get any money on the second hand sale, and they should be entitled to it

Later they tried interfering in lending.

They are total hypocrites. When they drive their Ferrari down to the dealership to buy a new one, and the sales guy offers them a part exchange, do they refuse on the basis the original manufacturer will not get any money on this transaction ?

When they sell their house do they agonise over what the original house builder should receive.

They are hypocrites. But the era of read only offline only disc and cartridge based games is over, so if you want to play, it’s on their terms now.

    I signed that petition.

The government response that was up was something along the lines of all this stuff already being covered by trading standards and consumer protections, and you can enter a complaint if you’ve been wronged.

    Anyone done that?

  18. gamerbros and grifters gonna be really mad when this goes as far as;

wow; that seems very hard to do and damaging to the industry, lets leave it up the countries

countries: this isn’t a voter issue, i dont care

  19. ThatFilthyMonkey on

Well I don’t know what difference it will make, but I emailed my MP informing them of the initiative, encouraging them to research the issue, and to support or should it be debated in Parliament.
