There will be the cameras there for the first few then it’ll go back to the same old same old

Can someone explain why the people on each boat can’t just be shipped straight back to France?

  3. After_East2365 on

So now we’re footing the bill for their uber to make it safer for them?

  4. Prestigious_Grade640 on

can somebody translate that headline to thick? the only thing i’ve managed to figure out after a couple minutes of scratching my head and trying to read the article is that it’s probably not about a plane pilot confirming that small boats have returned

  5. Surely ‘one in, one out’ means the net balance doesn’t change. Dump them within swimming distance off the coast of Africa in a dinghy with a pack of biscuits. Done.

  6. Unrelated to the UK, what are France doing about the people in the camps? Like why allow them to setup camp at the shore if France don’t want them either

What happens when you work with allies instead of needlessly antagonising them.

  8. This has really highlighted how illiterate your average Reform voter is. Lots of people clearly don’t understand what a pilot is.

I’m seeing is a lot of confusion around this policy.
Essentially it’s not actually about deporting people, its about the game theory of paying to come over on a small boat. If you know if you cross over you will just be returned to France, that immediately makes the whole effort pointless.

The UK is happy to tie the deportation to 1 person imported because its proportional to those coming over on boats. As the people crossing over decreases (as they will just now be returned to France), the number of people the UK imports from this policy also decreases. If they can get this to work it has the potential of instantly fixing the small boat crisis.

    This is ridiculous!

20,000 in , 20,000 back to France, then like for like 1 in 1 out means we still get 20,000 of em !

    Shambles, Farce !

This country has gone to the dogs !

  11. As an FYI, Greece and Turkey have had a similar deal in place for quite a while.

I did see a statistic floating around that illegal crossings did fall by around 90% initially as there was now a deterant.

Looking at the issues with it, it seems that some greek courts argued that Turkey was not a safe place, which is obviously not an argument for returning migrants to france.

There was also the fact that Turkey agreed in part due to the EU providing funding to help Turkey deal with the influx of illegal migrants. Turkey has since argued about the funds received.

Given the deal is between France and the UK, most of these arguments won’t apply. We have already paid france a princely sum to stop illegal boat crossings, and the deal reached prior to this strengthened that and has (at least, initially) seen to be working.

The ultimate goal is that France wants to remove the migrant camps from its northern coast. If Migrants now understand that they will be sent back to France if they have no ties to the UK then that already removes the incentive to pay thousands of euros to attempt the crossing in the first place.

Although this is only a pilot, if the UK and France see a marked success, then that is a result for all.

The trick now is for the UK and France to unleash some media coverage of this deal, and ensure that migrants understand that there is a very real chance they will end up back on the same side of the channel.

As an aside, with Syria now stabilised (somewhat) in the middle east I do believe we will see a very real drop in boat crossings and migrants. This also coupled with the germany-afghan deportations means that the more incentives that are withdrawn, the less appeal there is overall.

*”Migrants arriving via small boat will be detained and returned to France in short order.”*

*”In exchange for every return, a different individual will be allowed to come here via a safe route – controlled and legal – subject to strict security checks, and only open to those who have not tried to enter the UK illegally.”*

*The PM says this is a “pilot”, with reports suggesting that just 50 people per week will be sent to France back across the Channel.*

I’m glad that Starmer is making progress towards a return scheme, but “exchanging” 50 migrants a week isn’t going to make a difference.

Hopefully they manage to increase this number soon.

It definitely won’t slow down support for Reform in it’s current state, which is the real issue we’re facing imo.

  13. I don’t understand the benefit here? We can send back the boat arrivals to France, but we have to accept someone else for each person we send back. So, who are the people we get? More people waiting to get on a boat here in France?

  14. Now, strike an actual deal that solves the issue and returns the illegals to their home countries.

  15. RemarkableDistrict88 on

I don’t understand why the French put them in tents and we out them in hotels , why do we have a different approach to the French. Why doesnt France stop them entering their country to start with ?

  16. Nice enough sounding deal if the French actually hold up their side which given all of the past immigration deals they won’t

  17. It’s a bit of a catch 22 I think. Anyone that comes on a boat won’t be able to claim asylum – so you’re incentivised NOT to take a boat.

We now supposedly have a safe and legal route, which will essentially be proportional to the number of people who try to get to the UK on a boat “illegally”.

This should result in less people wanting to get on a boat as they can then be considered for the legal route, but by these rules it sounds like if the boats stop, then so too does the “safe and legal route” (no boat crossings – nobody being accepted via the new legal method).

France have an incentive to bring people back (because they essentially get to send the same amount of people over to us anyway) – but again, it should curb numbers if it ends up being the case that France will actually be bringing people back to France.

It could well “work” – but I wonder where these people will go instead if boat crossings get so low that there basically isn’t a way for them to (via safe/legal route) get to the UK. Next country of least resistance?

  18. France already is the holding area for these people, in effect.

It’s a win for the French government because, if the small boats don’t work any more, fewer people will travel to France trying to cross. So we both end up with fewer migrants.

  19. Acrobatic_Pianist_52 on

Nigel Farage has been saying send them back to France since the beginning. You people suffer from brain rot.

  20. Available-Ask331 on

One out, one in. Wont make any difference. Fail on the boats. You now have a second route.

Ask yourself, why would France stop illegals from moving out of their country and being a burden on someone else?

  21. But only Reform can stop the boats…they said they would
..the details are lacking but they will stop them

  22. Fuck_your_future_ on

Stop danging carrots so the poor bastards won’t walk through Europe or whatever to get to Calais.

  23. Dramatic-Badger-1742 on

Could someone explain this to me like I’m stupid.

Does this only apply to asylum seekers or also French people wanting to emigrate to the UK as well? Like does the other individual we swap have to be an asylum seeker or could it be a french national trying to join the their family in the UK?

I’m not opposed to either btw before someone has a go I’m just curious.

  24. EmergencyHorror4792 on

After reading this thread I’ve come to the conclusion that we shouldn’t do anything ever and just see what happens

  25. Weird-Statistician on

Hopefully, it will eventually apply to anyone coming in via an illegal route otherwise we’ll be back to folk jumping on top of lorries and in motorhomes instead. Once illegal routes are shut down, we need to process Asylum claims quickly and fairly. Don’t be afraid to take in genuine ones and send bogus ones home.
