Electricity prices continue skyrocketing as utility companies can’t meet demand fast enough. Low supply + High demand = surge pricing. Nuclear might be an option, but clearly there’s going to be a rocky period before those plants are online where peoples’ wallets will suffer. How long is this trend going to continue, and is it worth it?

If they are spiking prices due to low supply because of data centers, they should be making the data centers pay, not the regulars.
Though I guess keeping the poor poor, is better for the 1% who probably own the data centers

I really wonder what’s the “true cost” of an AI query and if those true prices would really have a sustainable market…
Right now we are all “enjoying” extremely subsidised prices because every gigantic corporation and venture capitalist are dumping billions into AI to hopefully come out on top when the market matures. Once those billions stop flowing into AI and those products will have to turn a profit… I wonder how big that market will really be and how many of those data centers will find themselves shut down…

Just makes solar panels more attractive. They don’t make sense in my area because we have cheap electricity from the grid.

Honestly the one good thing AI could do is reverse all the negative brainwashing around nuclear power… It really is our best chance of sustaining humanity until we have breakthroughs in renewables…

The real issue is states not producing their own power:
Pennsylvania is a significant exporter of electricity, particularly to states within the PJM Interconnection grid. The PJM grid includes all or parts of the following states:
* Delaware
* Illinois
* Indiana
* Kentucky
* Maryland
* Michigan
* New Jersey
* North Carolina
* Ohio
* Tennessee
* Virginia
* West Virginia
* District of Columbia

AI and the crypto scam will ensure we end up paying top dollar for electricity.

I really think this needs to factor into our conversations on revitalizing nuclear energy. We’re already seeing some spiking interest but this rapid growth necessitates a faster response

It’s really sad.
Every time we put in a solar panel, a whole plant, a windmill… every time we replace an incandescent with an LED, every time we replace an ICE car with an EV… we find more ways to need MORE power.
We’re installing TONS of green energy, but it still never keeps up with the demand for more, so the best we’ve done is tread water on the amount of fossil fuels we are using, and most years we don’t even do that, and we burn more, despite breaking records for solar and wind installations every year.

Paying for the electricity that AI uses to take our jobs and make our lives worse seems par for the course in America. Peak capitalism!

Price per kwh has increased 50% and by looking at the historical chart for electric prices in my county it’s the highest it’s ever been a couple cents more than when the Ukraine war started and jumped everyone’s bills a few years back.
Can’t actually find a reason though except something about an auction and investment in infrastructure.
People posting their bills and some are insane for an area like mine. $700 etc and saying their bill has more than doubled from last year. This is cornfield Illinois

I have zero understanding as to why everyone else is footing the bill for this shit in these states. If I, as a resident, spike my electricity bill, I pay for it.
If these companies are spiking electricity enough that it’s creating scarcity for everyone at all times, don’t you just make them specifically pay? Don’t you just dissuade their energy use by making it nonviable, because it is? I don’t get it, there’s always a dollar amount to where someone will start to realize “Oh wait, this doesn’t make sense.” We saw that happen with Bitcoin miners where the energy costs outweighed their earnings. Make it happen for AI.

I live in Delaware and I remember there being big talks of town halls regarding the recent pricing. Everyone was gung ho about it, but I havent heard anything in a few months. My power bill one month was basically double; I wonder if this was the cause.

Sweet. So it’s wrong regularly, replacing jobs and also costing me more money? What a deal. AI is the best.
