At this point I expect the Trump administration to sell Mars to the highest bidder.
prediction: He’ll do the same thing Bush did and sign an EO for an unworkable human spaceflight mission just before leaving office, with the incoming administration having to look like the bad guys when they cancel it.

Mars is not a good place for human habitation.
It will be incredibly impractical to sustain human life on Mars and it would be much more economically viable to start creating habitats on Earth (or in the ocean).
He lied. Shocking. Probably realized they couldn’t land on Mars while he was still president (yeah, yeah… obligatory “3rd term” comments will follow), so he killed it. No glory for him.
The budget is only coming back once the oompa loompa regime is ready to deport people through ICE-NASA, to Mars. And yes considering the current insanity I am considering this a plausible prediction.
That’s because he can grift millions out of a Mars mission. It’s a long enough term objective that he can collect bribes from contractors and deliver nothing. It’s much harder to grift from science based missions.

We should be focusing on the Moon and eventually it should be privatized, with oversight by the government.

Trump promises the world in order to make himself and his backers wealthy. He’s a con man.
Anyone who thinks about the problem for more than 30 seconds realizes humans will never go to Mars in our lifetime.
It’s wild how many grand promises were made with zero follow-through, Mars missions were just the shiny distraction. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next move is privatizing space exploration entirely while cutting NASA’s legs out from under it. Feels like we’re heading toward a future where billionaires dictate space policy instead of actual scientists. Classic move to dump an unrealistic mandate on the next admin and let them take the heat for cleaning up the mess.
