> The nationalisation of a second train company by the Labour Government has been completed.
> Operator c2c, which runs services between London Fenchurch Street and south Essex, was taken into public ownership on Sunday.
Here’s hoping to see news about the first nationalised water company.

Surely this means cheaper train tickets… Right? Right???

What’ll be an interesting conversation is when it’s all cemented and bedded in and they start talking about where the money’s going to go. I really do want the train fares to come down as it shouldn’t more than a holiday to German or France to get a train to London.
But I also think the unions will strike whilst the irony is hot and ask for the money to go to the workers instead of brining the ticket prices down.
That’s if the government don’t do their usual trick and remove the profits and send them to the NHS

Excellent. This can’t come fast enough. We have to undo the mistake of rail privatisation as quickly as possible

It’s a start but until they nationalise the rolling stock etc it won’t do much other than (hopefully) providing more accountability for the operations

I am getting a train from London to Liverpool later this year and the train is the same cost as a hotel. It’s a joke

As someone who has to use C2C, thank god for this. Even if the service doesn’t get better, at least I won’t be putting money into a foreign owners pocket for the privilege.

The main question I have on the nationalisation of anything is – what’s mechanisms are in place to ensure HMT and politicians don’t de-prioritise investment / financial support.
As inevitably, at some point, there’s going to be a clash between election giveaways and investment into these organisations.

This is stupid and will lead to rollbacks and reprivatisation.
Rail is a LOSS LEADER in your economy, you soak up the losses with PROFITABLE nationalised industries like energy and water, use the profits to subsidise transport which OVER TIME strengthens your economy.
This is the most basic macro, one can only assume the incompetence is deliberate sabotage at this point.

Privatising the railways was seen as a way to get needed investment into them without public funding that wasnt available, and the state of public train service at the time was dire.
Be careful what you wish for. The grass isnt always greener.

Absolutely love to see it.
Public transport, Gas/Electric and water should all be nationalised.

Nationalisation won’t make a much of difference. Northern have been nationalised for five years now and they’re still shit.
Most of the railway industry is already de-facto nationalised anyway, especially with the post-pademic reforms. The only actual private railway companies are the open access operators like Lumo. The TOCs are essentially just contractors hired by the DfT to run the train services.
The only major change that nationalisation will bring in is essentially just branding. The trains might get painted a different colour and they might make a new app, but that’s really it. The problems with the industry run a lot deeper.
Fundamentally, even after nationalisation, it’s still the same people (TOC staff just get TUPE’d over from one TOC to the next whenever a franchise changes hands) running the same railways on the same infrastructure under supervision of the same entity (the DfT) with the same budget in the same way under the same rules and regulations and the same terms and conditions. Nothing’s really changed.
Then there’s also the funding issue – ultimately, if you want cheap train tickets, you have to increase subsidies like they do in Europe.
