A new experimental obesity pill called SANA, developed by Eolo Pharma, shows promise as an alternative to GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic. Unlike GLP-1s which comes with gastrointestinal side effects and reduced appetite, SANA works by activating creatine-dependent thermogenesis which is a process that burns fat by generating heat in fat cells without affecting appetite. In a Phase I trial described in the journal Nature Metabolism, the drug led to statistically significant weight loss in participants after two weeks.

I’m sure that a lot of testing is done for the efficacy and safety of these medications. This being said I still have a lot of reservations about medications that drastically affect a person’s metabolism. There is a lot that could go wrong with something like this if it doesn’t work exactly as expected.

This is an interesting idea. But if you’re eating a shit load all day you probably should just be reducing your appetite regardless.
I’m not sure why glucomannan isn’t more popular. You just add it to a shake, it expands in your stomach, you feel full. Problem solved.

It’s the “thinner”diet from the Stephen King book. The first step is to run over a 137 year old gypsy

Isn’t this sort of what people tried by using amphetamines for weight loss?

Hopefully this would be safer than 2,4 DNP which also changes your metabolism but is very dangerous

Would this give me more energy or just make me really warm all the time?

You can kill relatives by mixing it in their food. They will starve without getting hungry.

I’ve always thought that there is a mechanism that converts sugars into fats and stores them in cells. Then there’s also a mechanism that converts those fats into sugars and releases them into the blood.
Here’s the point – both processes consume energy. Each conversion results in a little less energy in the end result. Nothing is ever 100% efficient.
So if we created a pill that puts both processes into overdrive, we will be burning energy constantly converting from sugar to fat to sugar to fat to sugar…

In a few years time these types of pills are going to be over-the-counter meds and people will be popping them like tictacs

Oh for the love of Pete, we just need to develop healthier eating habits. We don’t want to overindulge and take a pill to lose weight bc at the end of the day, it’s still not healthy. There is so much more going on with the obesity crisis than just fat. But anyways, if this drug turns out to work Big Pharma is gonna make baaank, but I will not be one of their customers.

Energy has to go somewhere. Does it rise body heat?
So if you keep eating you now have elevated temp all the time?
2000kcal is enough to bring to boil 25L of room temp water.

if your body’s producing lots of additional heat, could that cause problematic health effects?
Especially for obese people with lots of fat cells and higher heat retention

Drugs/meds are going to be insane in a few years. We’re really starting to understand the brain and how to tweak drugs for a particular use without the historical side effects

Isn’t appetite suppression what we really want, long term? Like, on a social scale, it’d save sooo much food production. With this everyone just eats like mad, needlessly ripping through resources.

There’s been plenty of those drugs throughout the years. Always super duper bad for you. Heat regulation tends to be the issue, burning more fat generates energy, almost all that energy becomes body heat.

Is it the one Big Cheeseburger is developing frantically so people will continue to overeat?
Just take the appetite suppressant, appetite suppression is a goal, not a side effect.

Okay, so it works by increasing metabolism. I’m not sure why that’s necessarily superior to the current medications that work by decreasing appetite. Normally increasing thermogenesis is going to cause a ton of problems, including overheating and as a result dehydration. Personally I would actually rather take the eating less than doing anything that messes up my metabolism.

More metabolism = more oxidative stress. That means more damage to your DNA and telomeres.

This is just going to allow those addicted to food to continue to eat 4-5k calories a day without gaining much weight. The insane amount of saturated fats, sodium, sugar, carbohydrates will still be hitting their bloodstreams and organs. Sure, they might lose some weight, but they’ll still be as unhealthy as ever. I’m not a ozempic fan, but at least it cuts calories and as a byproduct, reduces the amount of unhealthy garbage entering obese peoples bodies

When I was on Ozempic briefly the most miraculous thing about it was reduction in cravings – not just for food but everything – alcohol, shopping, collectibles.
I could eat 6 French fries and enjoy them… then not want anymore. Eat half a burger and leave the rest on my plate.
I could have a cocktail or a glass of wine and enjoy it… but not feel like I had to have a second one.
I could look at a collectible and think “that’s really nice” and not feel the urge to buy it.
If my insurance would cover it, I’d go back on it in a heartbeat. It felt like a cheat code – all my life I talked to friends who told me that they stopped eating because food no longer tasted good once they’d had “enough” and it was baffling to me. I have a PhD in cognitive psychology and UNDERSTOOD the mechanism of satiation – the brain changing your perception of taste once you’d had “enough” but I’d never experienced it. The last bite of food always tasted just as good as the first.
Personally I’d rather have the appetite suppression. I’ve been maintaining my weight for 3 years and every day sucks – feeling constantly hungry even though my tracked calories tell me I’ve had enough food. I KNOW it’s my brain tricking me and it’s not “real” hunger, but it’s like telling a person from Texas that feels cold at 70 degrees that it’s actually warm.
If I’m taking a drug to deal with this, I’d rather take one that causes me to reduce my consumption.
