I can’t believe this is where a council is choosing to spend resources. With all the issues we’re facing, crumbling roads, bins not being collected on time, cuts to essential services, and rising council tax, they somehow think this is a priority?

Even there argument is flawed. *’Cllr Frost warned that decisions affecting Cornwall are too often made in Westminster without Cornish voices at the table’,* you mean with the exception of the 6 Cornish MPs who sit in parliament? How exactly does this guy thinks a parliamentary democracy works?

You can’t build an economy on overpriced hotels and pasties I’m afraid.

So they’ll naturally not want any financial assistance from the UK government and with the high employment they enjoy in Cornwall (cough) and all of their diverse businesses and revenue streams outside of seasonal tourism I’m sure they’ll be a hugely beneficial fifth nation to the rest of the UK

Well devolution has been a storming success elsewhere in the UK look at the incredible work the SNP has done in Scotland….. oh hang on a Sec

  5. Wasting taxpayer money aside if there were to be a fifth nation we’d more likely start with Wessex, East Anglia, Northumbria etc.

    More red tape.

    Another level of bureaucrats.

If every road had a mayor, think how local voices would be heard!

…yeah, and think of the cost.

  7. My uncle lives in Cornwall and is one of the harbour masters there. It’s facing the same problems as the rest of the UK but arguably worse when it comes to housing and jobs. It’s a stunning, quiet place, still full of old locals, but this is likely the last generation who’ll actually be able to live there. Once the older generation passes, their kids won’t be able to afford to stay. The homes will just go to corporate buyers and millionaires.

The flag and the push for recognition have been around for decades, but let’s be honest, does anyone really believe the current government would willingly hand over any real status or power?

Not this shit again. As Cornwall born the county is unrecognisable with blow ins – not necessarily a bad thing but let’s not all get misty eyed about the uniqueness of the Cornish – it’s bollocks.

Well, London should be it’s own country with how it runs. I’d like to propose we rename it district 1

  10. I also declare my house must be recognised as the UK’s fifth country as forstegland

I’m Cornish. This is a joke.. always talking about independence, imagine if they decided to cut off funding to Cornwall and had to be self sufficient.. would be fucked. Moved out now, I would say this attitude is not present in the majority of people just the really backwards areas. But of course they all have a voice 😵‍💫

  12. Unable_Character2410 on

Ah that’s exactly what the UK needs. More instability. Good thing the UK economy is rock solid…oh, wait…

  13. EconomyLingonberry63 on

It was its own kingdom once, but I don’t think we should as it’ll get complicated, we gonna bring back all the old countries? Be wanting independence next

  14. More separatist “we’re so different to everybody else” nonsense. It’s always the same crap

This is starting to remind me of solar cycles.

*“Every few years Cornwall tries to…”*

  16. Councillor Dick Cole who brought the motion forward

    >currently serving as an elected member of Cornwall Council and the leader of the **Cornish devolutionist political party**, Mebyon Kernow, a role he has held since 1997.

    From his Wiki.

    That explains it all.

    What a…Dick ‘Ole.

  17. Yes ok Cornwall, time for your medicine. That’s it Cornwall, good Cornwall.

    Anyway…

    I’m all for this.

Unlike many other areas of England Cornwall in particular has a distinct culture, ethnicity and even some language factors that put it if not quite on par with the distinctions that Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, then not far behind.

  19. Can’t wait for every county to suddenly desire independence from England. What’s next, Wessex? Mercia? Northumbria? All the pre-english petty kingdoms? The logic here is so dumb.

  20. A separate nation is a daft ask, and we shouldn’t apply the Barnet formula to Cornwall any more than we’d apply it to Sussex, Wessex, or Mercia — but I would absolutely support Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset having an area with the powers equivalent to a Metropolitan mayor like Burnham.

  21. I actually rather like the idea because I don’t like the shape of a map of England when it includes Cornwall and Devon. It should be rounder.

  22. As a Devonian, I have been saying for years that every bridge over the Tamar should be dismantled and they should go and play their funny games by themselves. And when they come crawling back begging forgiveness, we should pretend not to hear them.

  23. Okay then, go for it. No offense but a quick research tells me Cornwall is one of the poorest parts of the uk per capita gdp.

Mostly a tourist income which is fine and would still occur but it’s not going to cause more tourism by becoming a nation.

You’ve got the dairy industry which is great but you haven’t got a monopoly on good dairy produce and thus can’t be raising prices to offset deficits, demand isn’t there anymore than it is now.

I don’t see what this is about besides some pride. We’ve all got that in the counties from which we are from. I’m from Warwickshire, shall I take a stand to reform the kingdom of Mercia?!

  24. This is good. Politics closer to the people, not hundreds or thousands of miles away

  25. voidthathouse on

yeah well I made a motion in my house that recognises my house as the 6th Nation! all Hail MyHousia!

  26. Cornish-Giant on

It’s about time after 300 years the English remembered that the Cornish are a nation

  27. ChairWitchProject on

Excellent. My proposal to recognise the kingdom of Northumbria as the sixth nation will be passed soon.
