  1. Static version of this gif in case people want to share in a place that doesn’t allow gifs. [https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1m803ba/the_staircase_of_denial_oc/](https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1m803ba/the_staircase_of_denial_oc/)

the idea is that between every record hot year people go ‘look it hasn’t gotten warmer in X years global warming is disproven. Checkmate now, king me’

    Data from Met Office [https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcrut5/](https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/hadobs/hadcrut5/)

And i want to make a way to easily see how warming continues inside normal variations (things like the el niño cycle) and a new record year is coming.

I heard about the escalator of denial here and wanted to update it and make the code public [https://skepticalscience.com/graphics.php?g=465](https://www.google.com/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fskepticalscience.com%2Fgraphics.php%3Fg%3D465)

Python code here if you want to make your own version [https://gist.github.com/cavedave/a11fa410a471b4fb50b656e76e3edbe0](https://gist.github.com/cavedave/a11fa410a471b4fb50b656e76e3edbe0)

  2. Love it.

Unfortunately, I think those people have moved on to “but it isn’t man-made” or “the weather is always changing”.

  3. the progress of measurement errors. I put a thermometer in near a forest in 1980 – quite cold there. In 2020 there is no forest but the nearest town has expanded to a bigger city. Now the thermometer isn’t in the forest anymore but close to massive concrete structures.
Also I installed much more thermometers across the city and removed some from the forests, as they are a pain in the ass to maintain.
But for 45 years, i still add up all measurements i have and take the average.
Yes, this is a made up story in this particular me-case, but it is based on real facts. So the measurements are correct, the statistics are correct, but it’s also biased by surrounding changes.

  5. Pretty sure thr Mayans were right. The world died in 2012, we never considered that the death of a planet could take 1000s of years.
