One thing that surprised me is Arthur being 4th for boys. Maybe it’s just me, but that’s the sort of name I’d associate with older men, so to see it make a resurgence is interesting.

Reminds me of a story, my fil was a London cabbie and like so many wasn’t a fan of Muslims. Then he had a heart attack and had to stop working. He was very upset that his old cabbie friends stopped coming to visit pretty quickly. Except for one, good old “mo” who visited every week and brought nice gifts….

Why the fuck would it be between that or Muhammed? Why don’t they just pick a common name like a normal person?

Where are all the Muslim girl’s names. How can the boy’s name be top with no sign of girls’ names?

>Muhammad tops the list of boys’ names for the second year running
If you account for the various spellings of the name Muhammad (Mohammed, Muhammed, Muhamed, etc) its been the number 1 name since 2015 or so. Pretty funny at this point.

Can confirm. One of our neighbours had three children in 2024. Twins in January, and another one in December. The called all of them Muhammad, even the girl.
But you tell people that, they won’t believe you.

Has this list changed much at all in the past 20 years? Because I swear it really hasn’t.
Are we just stuck in a naming rut?

I like how no one cared about this ranking until a decade ago when muslim names topped the charts

Kinda bitter that Lily is so popular these days, though I am glad it’s the proper spelling of it! I never had the luxury of finding my name on a funky pencil case in the 90s and I’m bitterly jealous that the Lily’s of today get to have that.
Although I did name my own daughter an old fashioned name that’s not really popular anymore, I’ve condemned her to the same fate

Have we checked if there’s been an uptick in boarding schools recently? All these Quentin’s have got to be coming from somewhere.

The name ‘Yahya’ saw a larger increase in baby name popularity than any other male name in the top 100 in the UK last year.
The name, which is shared by the former leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, gained 33 places in ranking from the previous year to become the 93rd most popular male name in the UK in 2024. Five hundred and eighty-three newborn boys in total were named Yahya last year in the UK.

I think it’s time Sherlock made a comeback as a boys name after all it’s the name of one of Britain’s greatest heros. Also Brenda for girls is very underrated.
