The Lithuanian government fell due to scandals – the prime minister allegedly made business

The government of 46 -year -old Prime Minister Gida Paloukas in Lithuania resigned, under the expense of financial scandals that caused demonstrations. Paloukas is one of the richest Lithuanians, with businesses in Turkey and Brazil, but also in his home country

Paloukas has previously faced condemnation of his business transactions. Media surveys revealed that it had never paid a significant part of a fine of 16,500 euros when a serious irregularity tender in the capital was proven. The court ruled that Paloukas (then in the municipality of the capital) had used his political influence to give the project to the company that had made the most expensive offer. He was sentenced to two years in prison, but was eventually not imprisoned and was fined. The media investigations found that it did not pay the fine and is at the same time being investigated by the Authorities for the Combat of Corruption and for other interventions. He denied any infringement and instead described the attacks on his business transactions as part of a “coordinated attack” by his political opponents.

The Lithuanian Financial Crimes Investigation Service conducted a survey at the Paloukas sister -in -law company. This company allegedly used EU funds to buy battery systems from a company owned by Paloukas. The research comes after previous reports of Lithuanian journalists, who revealed two months ago that the Paloukas company that traded batteries, had received a subsidized state loan while he was already prime minister.
