As a foreign tourist, you need to register at the police station for each accomodation you go to. If you are in an airbnb it’s annoying because you need to go with the owner to show the "rental contract" + she signs some document on your behalf or smth.
Why do we need to register? And do Macedonians also need to do that when they travel inside the country?
I still did not understand if I needed to do that every time I change places, or only if I stay more than 48h. One could change everyday and not do any of that paperwork. And what if you go camping in the mountains, wonder what is the rule.
I remember in Uzbekistan you also needed to ask for accomodation receipt on a daily basis at the hotel, because of potential terrorist attacks. But I wonder what is the purpose here in MKD; the owner told me it is supposedly for statistics only. It seems like a very cumbersome way to do stats imho. And if you don’t have that paper at customs, you might get a fine; but again nobody could tell me its certainty or the amount of the fine
Just curious about these rules

Every person needs to update their place of stay. Even temporary ones. AFIK you can also do it online.
This is needed in most countries around the world and usually the place of stay sorts that out for you. When you go to any hotel/accommodation you give your Passport/Id with which they log you in their “book of stays” and report your new location to the police.
I’m sure this is not related to Macedonia only, I have to register everywhere I go as well (Austria, Serbia, Germany, Greece etc) .. usually we are “protected/ignorant” of this because the accommodation is the one that is doing it in the background. Even for Serbia (I have private accommodations with family) I don’t have to go the police station for example, just my mother in law goes and fills in the details that I’m staying there with my passport info.
Not sure whey they asked you to go there with the host.
It seems like a remnant of Soviet-era/Yugo/Commie population control system

and yes by law even Macedonians if they change where they live, for example move to another town etc, they need to sign off from the old place and report in the new place police station .. in practice though I guess lots are not bothered with this
and on on my travels so far no one has asked me for proof at the borders as well ..
When you go to the US on a B1/B2 visa you have to first get approved for a visa, then when you arrive the officer will have to look into your return ticket, your accomodation, money you have and other stuff. It is a standard procedure for every country. Just a little diffrent.
Its an old law that is still very present throughout Europe and abroad but you’re only feeling it because you’re outside the EU/Schengen and find it weird. Whereas I still have to register with the police when I go to the EU so I know about it in advance. Usually the hotels do it on the spot because they’re connected to the relevant police servers for registering and it goes unnoticed by many tourists. Airbnb’s are a new concept and if they’re a legit business I expect them to follow the law. And no citizens don’t need to register anything when traveling inside the country this only applies to foreigners.
In most countries, including nearly all of Europe, the accommodation address of every tourist must be registered with the police. This is a standard legal requirement. By law, the property owner or hotel manager is responsible for completing this process, can be done online by entering information from your passport.
In some cases, the host may not understand the system and laws very well, and if they fail to register your stay, you are legally required to visit the local police station yourself. Border police will not ask to see this paper thing for sure.
It is not related to statistics, but rather serves as a security measure and a measure to help prevent illegal migration. Personally, I find this regulation stupid and ineffective, more practical and way stricter systems for tracking foreign visitors could be implemented.
As for MK citizens, the obligation to register an address and obtain new personal documents applies only if they move to another place permanently. This does not apply to tourism.
It’s a retarded слепо црево remnant from the Yugoslav days. It’s not that tourists shouldn’t be tracked by the state, but this method of doing it is ancient.
Old ancient law . I’ve been to a bunch of places even living there and never once we had to do this duty , there are other ways countries check.. Never mind have a good time I guess
That’s a remnant from Yugoslavia.
Never registered anything when i have gone with my family for a short stay in macedonia, even in albanian or montenegro
Because this is MACE-DO-NI-AAAAAAA!!!!
