Hi r/germany! I am a 20-year old swedish guy looking to move to Germany for work and studies. Although, not having much in experience of your country and people i could use some help. I’ve been planning a bit with chatgpt, but AI being AI i got an unrealistic portrayal of how it was for me as a foreigner to move to an entirely different country. Thats why i want to get a more realistic portrayal of what i could expect from such a move.
I have been very keen on moving to another country for a while, and i thought that germany would be culturally enriching. Also i would love to learn the language and the people. I actually studied german in school, plus i have continued a bit on duolingo and have now reached A2 level. Other than that i seek to study german on a higher level, if i want to study at any universities either in germany or switzerland. What are are some great courses i could go for C1/C2?
I seek to move either winter of next year or spring the year thereafter. I have passport/ID and aim to save ~4000 euros till the move. I have not planned a place of staying yet, but i have looked around a bit on wg-gesucht.de . What are some of the more affordable big cities and which places/areas should i avoid? Which cities have a reputation for being safe/unsafe, cheap/expensive and fun/boring?
And when it comes to employment, is it easy/difficult to find an entry-level job in germany? I don’t have much experience in the workforce, which is something that the swedish job market does NOT appreciate. I did recently graduate from swedish high school (with a grade of 82%) and now have my exam papers in order. My program consisted of pre-university studies (Abitur i believe its called?) on the technical line (think physics, math, chemistry). I also aim to get a certificate in English C2 till next summer, and a A2/B1 certificate in German. I also plan to work a short period in Sweden (if i ever get a job lol) which could be good experience wise. Would finding a job be ideal considering these factors?
Also, would finding friends or a social circle be challenging in germany? I have heard that germans often are cold/distant and have rigid social norms when it comes to what’s acceptable or not. I wouldn’t want to appear rude to the locals, we swedes get quite a lot of that especially in stockholm. But other than that, could i easily find friends if i went to some courses on photography, music, cooking?
And to the most important: cost of living!
Would i be able to support myself on a entry-level salary living in germany? I plan to move into a Wohnungsgemeinschaft and have already looked around a bit on wg-gesucht.de in Dresden. I have heard that Dresden is a great and affordable city for students, but that info comes from chatpgt so im not sure. Also, are the food prices good? For reference, grocery shopping in stockholm for our household of four (family, i am not the main breadwinner lmao) costs ~400 euro per month. I get that i won’t be dining as a king when living on an entry-level salary, and am would prefer to share a kitchen with roommates if im going to be living in a WG.
I also have a couple of other questions:
How are foreigners treated in germany? I am light skinned and blond. I am also willing to adapt to the culture and learn the language, manners, history etc. Do people in germany look favourably upon foreigner even if they are from the EU?
Are alcohol prices high in germany? I know it may seem like a small thing, but im just curious :3
Are there any german customs i should be aware off? as said, i dont want to come of as rude when moving to an entirely new country.
Are there any other things i should be aware of?
Thats enough questions i think, sorry if i ask a lot of questions but as said i am determined to move to germany and want to make my move and integration as smooth as possible. I look forward to experiencing your country and culture!

Hey, first of all. Thanks for the interest in my home country. Alot of your thoughts highly depend on the city you want to move too. I for example life with my wife and Friends in a shared house and we have a great time. Regensburg is with 120k-130k a middle sized city with tons of students. The life is good and if you don’t want to move to munich or Hamburg (the major cities) life is not cheap but affordable. If you are interested we could chat on Whatsapp or have a short call for more details about Germany. Greetings from Regensburg
