On August 20, 917, at the mouth of the Aheloy River, near Anhialo (now Pomorie), the Bulgarian troops, led by Tsar Simeon I, defeated the Byzantine troops led by Leo Foca.

The Aheloian battle is one of the largest. More than 120,000 soldiers participate in it. For the first time, in Bulgarian history, before the battle on the initiative of Tsar Simeon I, a watershed of the Bulgarian combat flags was served before the battle of the Aheloy River.

Before the battle, Byzantium tried to organize an anti -Bulgarian coalition and attract the Pechenegs, Magyars and Serbian tribes of Peter Goynikovic on his side. However, the Magyars and Pechenegs do not fulfill the commitments to Byzantium and stand on the side of the Bulgarian army.

King Simeon I commanded the battle in which the Byzantine army was surrounded and pushed to the sea, and most of the Byzantines were killed.

Defeat is one of the worst in Byzantium. After the battle, the Bulgarian state gained complete military -political supremacy in Southeastern Europe.
