The sheriff said as this was the first child the lorry driver had killed and he was very sorry, we will let him off with community service.

Earlier today we had comments criticising Cycling Mikey for reporting phone use (usual comments of stationary traffic etc). Now here’s someone who used their phone several times while driving in a city before later killing a child on the pavement. The driver may not have been on their phone at the time of the incident but it shows the standard of driving.
Unfortunately Police Scotland are useless and the only police force in the country not to have an online portal for reporting road crime, so drivers like this can get away with other offences, and their defence advocate can tell the court it was their “first criminal offence” to enable a lenient sentence.

>Thomas was cycling on the pavement to school when he was struck by the truck at the exit of a golf club in Cramond. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
So he ran the kid over on the pavement? Also he was seen using a phone earlier in the day. What the actual fuck is this sentence.

So killing cyclists is just a slap on the wrist? People wonder why so many ride on the pavement.

If you ever want to kill someone in the UK get behind the wheel and do it, awful sentencing.

It was a genuine accident.
What would locking him up have accomplished?

“The court heard that Wallace had used his mobile phone several times while driving the lorry before the crash.
This had occurred earlier in the day and it had no bearing on the collision involving the child.”

Poor kid, he didn’t deserve that x It seems like more incompetence than any malicious intent but it still seems off to me.

it’s been said before, but if you want to kill someone in the UK just run them over, then say you lost control because a spider crawled into your eye or the sun was in your eyes or you swerved to avoid a cat or something and you’d be lucky to do a years jail time for it.
