
my ancestor moved to America in the 1860’s, our original surname was "open"I was told it meant "hill" essentially "from the hills"just tried to look it up and found nothing, any help is appreciated friends!

From what I can tell it basically refers to a place that is slightly elevated from the rest of the area, not necessarily a hill but above something else of significance, like another estate/farm.
More likely the name of a farm situated high up in a valley or hillside.
