Damn, as an Australian I knew we lived pretty long compared to the global average but I didn’t realise how much higher we were. I’m sure the weather helps, along with accessible healthcare services.

  3. It’s missing countries with lower unemployment rate, lower young person unemployment rate, less bureaucracy, and high social mobility.

  4. The murder rate you’ve taken from NZ was in 2021. The terrorist attack that killed 50 people pushed the rate up. Other countries are from 2023 and 2024.

NZ isn’t mentioned as separate from Australia in life expectancy.

  5. Life expectancy is statistically very interesting.

Spain is a very popular retirement country for much of Europe and the UK (especially the UK). Lots of wealthy old people move to spain. And old people are people who are by definition more likely to die late than young people (by virtue of not having died young in the past).

If you suddenly moved a bunch of 70 years olds from country A to country B, the life expectancy in country B would shoot up.

But more interestingly: If you moved a bunch of 40 year olds from country A to B, the same thing would happen, even if the average life expectancy at birth is over 40. The same thing applies as for old people. Out of all the people born in 1985, the ones who died before the move did so in country A, the ones who die after the move will die in country B. Importing 40-year-olds gives a higher life expectancy than “growing your own”.

  7. Projected to exceed Japan’s GDP per capita.

Still worth living in Japan for the lower murder rate and higher life expectancy.
