The US has no interest in science or leadership in general any more. They are a silly people, and silly people don’t go to the stars.

Space race? Let’s vote to gut NASA, then announce how important it is! MAGA wants to roll the country back to the 1700s. The good old days of slavery, White men reigned supreme, women did what they were told, we had superstitions instead of science, and practically no one was vaccinated. MAGA doesn’t want a future. It wants the past. There was no space race in the 1700s, so it’s not relevant.
I mean… You SAY that but when you take a breather on the sidelines, down an entire bottle of coke and stuff a Zym pack into your mouth, and then talk on the sidelines about how you can’t let your opponent win the race while they catch up to you as they are still running…
It’s a whole lot harder to make sure China doesn’t win a race you’ve all but stopped participating in.

The problem is he thinks “the space race” is to put boots and flags on the Moon, again, and that’s it. The real space race mining the asteroid belt, permanent manned research base on the Moon, larger stations capable of on-orbit construction, and eventually colonizing Mars.
John should probably stop supporting everything Trump does then.
These senators live in the 1960’s and think that the space race is exclusive to a race to land on the moon. Yet what they miss is that China is also rolling out an exploration plan for the solar system and pushing scientific research. That’s the race that counts and what build national power.
Sen. Cornyn is doing performative politics again.
So, how did he vote on the bill that cut NASA’s budget?

It’s not just gutting NASA and other agencies, as mentioned in comments here already, it’s that smart people from other countries are not going to come here anymore for school, for research, or for space-related jobs. Which is, of course, related to the people doing the gutting alluded to already.
China has a logical plan and will establish robust and reliable supply chain between here, the Moon and the asteroid belt before we recover from this wholly irresponsible nightmare that’s happening in the White House. Cornyn and The other Trump sycophants just want to put boots on the ground but don’t care about the science, which is kind of the whole point. They don’t care about anything else except another photo opportunity where they can beat their chests screaming USA! USA! USA! China will get a foothold on the Moon, begin mining it’s resources, and use those resources to further expand into the solar system. They’ve got a plan in place that isn’t beholden to the whims of a new president every 4 to 8 years. The United States is going to become a second rate space faring nation.

Too bad the actions of the current administration is pretty much handing the Moon and space to China on a silver platter.
