The essay above is a response to a series of Adam Curtis documentaries that discuss the way we increasingly think about ourselves as machines. It problematizes human/machine distinctions, helping us think about our own place in the future. This is especially pressing given the way LLMs have raised questions about the way we create: what makes us unique? Are we unique at all? I’m not sure that it’s a meaningful question, and it’s better that we think about ourselves in terms of systems.
