  1. Source: This is a picture of my bill, in which the power company includes the current and previous years’ useage.

  2. Out of curiosity what did the upgrade cost and/or what’s the expected payback time from the net savings?

  3. Without knowing the average outside temperature, it does not tell you much. Central Texas summer was over 10 degrees cooler this year over last year. I did not change my HVAC unit, but I have seen similar savings.

  4. Depending on the price of the work, seems like it’ll only take a couple years to pay for itself through the savings. Very nice, do make sure you stay on top of basic maintenance to avoid service calls though.

  5. I need to do this. Currently in the middle of getting solar installed though. Good to see the numbers, I’m hoping to see similar gains when I install a new system.

  6. I spent $10k on my HVAC upgrade (it was 20 years old) and I’ve saved a little in the summer on avg but not much (maybe $15/mo). The main difference is now I can keep my house at 77F and not 81F.

  7. I bought a house with a 20 year old hvac system. Southern California.

First few months of electricity bills were a few hundred bucks (fine, it’s summer and electricity is expensive here).

Then six months in the power company says “O by the way we were mis-billing you. The smart reader wasn’t transmitting so those were just estimates. You were actually using $1k+ per month”

I rageddd, but ultimately couldn’t get anywhere with them.
