The general election creates an environment that is ripe for the picking for Russian propagandists to sow false narratives and conspiracy theories online, and not always in the most obvious of places.
Analysts monitoring Russian disinformation online have found pro-Kremlin networks targeting social media platforms to influence domestic politics in other countries and sway public opinion ahead of elections, including the UK.
“I think it is not a risk, it is a probability,” Keir Giles, senior consulting fellow of the Russia and Eurasia Programme at Chatham House, told i of potential interference in the upcoming election. “If Russia sees an opportunity to influence or even discredit a democratic process, it will take it.”
One of the tactics Russia deploys is the use of online propagandists and disinformation merchants, who pose as voices from within the British media. While some of these accounts may be easy to identify as “bots”, or have a profile created only days ago, others might seem like a genuine person.

Good luck to them with mumsnet.
I’d have thought there’d be international interest in the election and multiple attempts to influence it, but its hard to tell how much of an affect it will actually have.

I love a bit of mumsnet, pesky Ruskies getting involved in our election. We wouldn’t want that would we. All we need is an Aussie to tell us what to do, yes, you Mr Murdoch

Most people think election interference is pushing people to vote for one side or the other. It usually isn’t.
The goal is to divide us.
They stir both sides until we hate each other. Until there are the far right vs the far left. Brexiteers vs remainers. Black vs white. Rich vs poor. They want conflict between ourselves. This is the real aim.
Brexit is the perfect example of this. All these years later we are still divided and in conflict with ourselves. There are still Brexiters and Remainers. We are to busy fighting among ourselves to worry about foreign affairs. We are no longer a united country and that’s the goal.

If UK politics is so weak and undefined that another country can easily meddle in it, then that’s a poor indictment on British politics.
We are being ruled by morally weak corporate quislings and the majority are paying for it.

When you have UK governments not wanting to do investigations incase they find russian meddling… Why would Russia stop?

I wonder if they will flood Reddit with leftie bots telling us how things will be milk and honey under Labour…?

Well that might cost labour a couple of points from their massive victory.

This is very similar to the pro Russia interference that happened on tumblr a few years back

Putin going on mumsnet and being like “fucking hell it’s a bit too far to the right in here”

In other words, any comments that are anti-tory are assumed to be Russian meddling 😇 pull the other one.

I am so sick of Russia trying to drag the rest of the world down to their shitty level rather than being a sane and rational country that tries to better itself. The day Putin dies and the dysfunctional regime collapses under its own bullshit can’t come soon enough.

I used to think that I was afear’d of no place on the internet…Not even 4chan, but mumsnet…That place scares me.

Surely Mumsnet is already toxic enough to scare off warmongering Russian spooks?

Mumsnet is a fucking brilliant forum, by far the most entertaining but also the most aggressively moderated. I got banned for ageism because someone’s mother-in-law was telling her and her husband that he had to name their baby the name that the mother-in-law liked and, if they didn’t, she would do X, Y, Z. Blah blah blah. I said “just ignore the silly old bat” and got an immediate permaban.

Ooh better stay away from mumsnet. Good job they won’t bother with Reddit.

I think Russian interference might actually make Mumsnet *less* transphobic.
