>Unlike many large-scale energy initiatives, this project is fully private and does not rely on government contracts.
While it’s good news, this makes me feel uneasy. Private companies only put money in when there’s money to be made, presumably this will bake extra costs into our bills for years to come.
While there’s no government contracts, I’ll bet there’s funding and subsidies from the government, so we’ll be paying twice.
Someone please correct me if I’m being overly cynical.

It’d be nice if we could get away from Lithium really, although I don’t know what the current alternatives in battery technology look like at the moment. Lithium just seems like a very expensive way to do it, fine for phones and maybe cars but how well it can be scaled up remains to be seen.

Would be interesting to see what a hydro storage system of a similar size would have cost. Dinorwig is as clean and efficient as you can get.

There has been an explosion in new energy storage schemes since Labour came to power. To put this into perspective the government estimates we’d need 23-27GW of energy storage to reach 95% renewables. From just the start of the year to June, 30GW of energy storage has been submitted.
