Japanese Ambassador comes over and does something that makes him beloved by the locals and even makes a real reference showing he cares. Manchester gets sister-city status with Osaka, finally getting some treatment like the global hub of culture Manchester deserves to be recognised as. Nice situation all around.

    >After downing the pint, he said “By ‘eck, it’s gorgeous,” repeating a slogan featured in a 1990s advert for the cask ale originally brewed in Manchester.

Someone has been *very* well briefed.

    > He was presented with a pint of Boddingtons beer by the Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham to mark the first pint of Boddingtons to be commercially available in the city in 13 years.

Why did Manchester have a 13 year Boddingtons drought?

It’s funny, every time I see an ambassador in the news doing something likeable it’s a Japanese ambassador. I can’t work out if Japan has the best PR for their ambassadors, or just the best ambassadors.

  5. This man is the best diplomat I have ever seen. He obviously loves his homeland, but he loves us almost as much, and has dived in headfirst into British culture and showing both countries what is amazing about each other.

  6. Invite some Japanese over to plan, build and operate a high speed railway network and then we’re talking!

I mean really, Japan builds Shinkansens with 80% of their country being mountainous and impassable to trains or very expensive tunnels, also prone to earthquakes and tsunamis. Yet even with these handicaps they build the worlds best railway network.

  7. I like this guy; He embraces british culture so well & loves to immerse himself in it. A proper ambassador in my view, he really seems to like his job; I think i’ll mourn when he goes.

  8. Osaka is really like Manchester – people are relaxed and not “up themselves” like Tokyo. It is also more grimey and less refined than other metropolitan cities in Japan. It was my favourite city to visit.

When in Rome do as the Romans do.

What a guy. Hopefully our ambassador is able to equally represent the UK in Japan in such a good light.
