The flag is an identifier.
If used in official capacity, flags are useful.
If used as an identifier among the people, it’s an identifier of ‘us’ and ‘them’ by definition.
Same applies in war — people look to WW2 imagery to show how we’ve always been proud of the flag — except ‘us’ vs ‘them’ is necessary in wartime, so it seems like a mark of pride.
It’s a mark that says nothing more than ‘we are the in-group’.
The fact that this statement is classed as “breaking news” is a joke.
Stamp out the fascists and people won’t associate the flag with fascists anymore.
If the fascists feel comfortable waving the flag, most normal people will associate the flag with fascism.

If you want to display the English Flag and show that you aren’t part of Reform/National Front whatever just fly it with the Pride Progress flag. Simple.
So the violence was in sections where there was a failure to segregate the protestors from anti protestors. That seems like a failure from the police itself, if anything – though in fairness I doubt anyone expected > 100k to turn up let alone 150.

I’m afraid surrendering the flag happened years ago Keir. Rightly or wrongly the English (outside of football tournaments) and British (outside of official functions) flags are seen as offensive and divisive by large parts of the left and seen as a two fingered salute to wokeness” by large parts of the right.
Overall the whole thing is just a bit sad and summarises the failings of this country in the last half century.
I do find it interesting that travelling in Europe I see various national flags flown without any controversy or issue but in the England (Scotland/Wales have plenty of national flags) I’m far more likely to see foreign flags than I am English ones.

His words about ‘democracy’ ring hollow when the politicians did this to the British people without any democratic mandate. And still they do it, daily, large numbers legally, which they know is expressly against what most of us want. Hence the flag protests, and Saturday’s mass demonstration. If you want to end that, sort if out. But don’t bleat about democracy when you keep ignoring the will of the people.

What is he talking about? There were thousands of different kinds of people and different backgrounds there?? There were some injuries which is to be expected but only 24 arrests?? Out of 150,000 people?? Surely that speaks to the behaviour of the other participants? They were waving the British and English flags and freely expressing their beliefs like millions of others do in Britain.
They’re flying the flag because they’re being told to be ashamed of it in their own country, while councils magically find the time and money to remove them.

I was thinking that shouldn’t the news to broadcasting and really emphasising the protests in London as a deterrent to illegal migration.
I mean if people around the world saw that the country they are about to illegally cross into had such a huge gathering, then surely that would possibly put them off attempting it and stay in France.
The government should be hitting home to these people that the uk is not as easy going as it once was to people who want to come here on a boat.

When he’s already surrendered the country. The raising of the flags is a much-needed reminder that actually both main parties over the last ten years have worked totally against the interests of the people that they represent. Every single policy from giving away the Chagos islands and then renting them back, 20 billion for the war on the Ukraine, 20 billion to capture carbon emissions produced mostly by China and endless migration has made our lives significantly worse.
He’s missing the point. He really isn’t very bright. Councils – all councils – should have been ordered to remove ALL flags hung by all the flagsha**ers across the UK, and it should have been done quickly as a show of respect to all immigrants and those who aren’t racist and dont like what’s going on. But flags are still up in many areas. They’ve done nothing. Taking a flag down put up by a far right asshole is not an act of surrendering it. It is an act of saving it’s real meaning. The Union Jack and St George cross should not be about intimidation, territorial pissing and “you’re not welcome here” if you’re an immigrant, and these far right POS are being allowed to tarnish the flag’s meaning into something ugly and hateful, turning it into the swastika. As per usual Starmer is handling this issue terribly. That’s all he knows how to do, handle things terribly. He needs to be removed.

Some of the flags in the photo have extra text on them. If someone needs to do that, then by definition they are trying to use it to stand for something that it doesn’t genuinely stand for.
