Would you need a chart removing 9/11 if the chart was for the murderers and not the victims?

  2. Worth noting is that the source for this is the Cato Institute, a Koch-funded think tank with particular political leanings.

If this is the maximum amount of lipstick they can find to put on the pig of right-wing extremism in the United States, you know it’s bad.

  3. I don’t think the right has any intention of losing their numbers lead. On another note, I think may on the right do consider the Islamism motivated murders as being “left” murders so they would probably refute this data.

  4. i made a tiktok about this that got throttled. pretty sure i shouldnt have mentioned the president.

  5. would help if the chart said clearly “murders =victims” – ppl confuse it with number of attackers. 9/11 skews the victim count hard, but was just a handful of perpetrators.

  6. Categorizing these is an admittedly tough task, but didnt immediately pass the sniff test.

Robert Allen Long, for example murdered 8 Asian massage workers which would likely seem racial in nature, but county investigators saw no evidence of racial bias, and by his admission, “wanted to punish those that enabled his sex acts”.

What would then be the rationale for it to be labeled ‘right’?

  7. How about not killing people over politics…??

    This applies to everyone.

The left / right arguments on this thread are absurd.

  8. Well yes but as the electoral college demonstrates, right wing people matter more, so when weighted more appropriately, left wing murderers outweigh right wing murderers.

And anyway, this data is obviously skewed by the notoriously left wing polling apparatus…/checks fine print…the Cato Institute.  I’m sure George Soros is behind this group…oh, Charles Koch founded it?  Had no idea Charles Koch had become a radical leftist.  Shame.

This only shows murders committed by foreign born terrorist. Does not depict any acts committed by domestic terrorists.

Seems like at least some of the perpetrators marked “Left” should be in the “Other” category.

    Robin Westman:

    >YouTube videos allegedly posted by the shooter suggest Westman experienced depression and expressed admiration for at least a dozen other acts of mass violence, but didn’t spell out any specific ideology.

    [https://wtop.com/national/2025/08/what-we-know-about-the-shooter-who-killed-2-and-wounded-17-in-minneapolis/](https://wtop.com/national/2025/08/what-we-know-about-the-shooter-who-killed-2-and-wounded-17-in-minneapolis/)

    >An analysis from the Anti-Defamation League noted that Westman’s writings contain clear antisemitic messages as well as other racist content targeting Christians, Jews, Black people, LGBTQ+ individuals, Muslims and Hispanics.

Not sure why the author put Westman in the “Left” category. Westman’s motives seemed mostly in line with their experience at the specific Catholic school, but they were at ideologically mixed.

Why was Luigi Mangione put in the “Left” category? He grew up in a conservative household and there’s no evidence he broke from that. It seems like he had a bad experience with the healthcare industry, but if that’s what makes someone “Left”, then everyone in this country is “Left”.

    >Investigators’ working theory for the [motive behind the shooting](https://www.cbsnews.com/newyork/news/unitedhealthcare-ceo-murder-luigi-mangione-motive-nypd/) is animosity toward the health care industry. The NYPD said it appears Mangione suffered a debilitating back injury on July 4, 2023, that required a visit to an emergency room and subsequently screws on his spine, according to images posted on social media.

According to the NYPD, Mangione was in possession of notebook paper that had handwritten notes that expressed disdain for corporate America, in particular the health care industry.

  11. Not very pertinent in my opinion, for all we know one guy could be responsible for all the murders of one group, which would skew what this chart is most likely trying to convey…

  12. Just a coincidence that Reddit won’t allow to download this image? Glad you can just screenshot it

  13. From your survey, Muslims make up just 1% of the U.S. population yet account for 23% of all politically motivated murders (excluding 9/11), while right-wing conservatives make up around 50% of the population, judging by the latest election, but are only slightly overrepresented, at 63% of all politically motivated murders.

  14. Honestly I think seeing the graph without OKC probably would be interesting too, since like 9/11, it was a mass casualty event that skews the numbers so far one way.

  15. This data is neither beautiful nor reliable.

    >The Cato Institute is an American libertarian think tank headquartered in Washington, D.C. It was founded in 1977 by Ed Crane, Murray Rothbard, and Charles Koch,[5] chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Koch Industries

    >Atlas Network and its partners, such as the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Cato Institute, and Fraser Institute,[33] have been linked to oil and gas producers, as well as efforts opposing governments’ and activists’ efforts against climate change.

How do we measure the people who have been harmed due to the actions of the authors of this study? The people responsible for social murder are quick to label those who call them out as “terrorists.”

  16. Not sure why we talk about this. We associate the far right with fascist Nazis. Yes, they’re crazy murderers (totally needed this chart to see that). Then we make this leap that someone who wants to pay less taxes and be less encumbered by the government (a conservative) is somehow “right leaning” or “more right” than a liberal. I don’t get it. The far left in America seems to act more like National Socialists than any other group.

  17. When even the Caro Institute has to acknowledge that the majority of political violence is perpetrated by the right wing, you know it must be true. This is like Trump conceding that he’s bad at golf.

  18. Why is Islam the only religious ideology but Judaism and Christianity are not listed (or any other religion)?

  19. strumthebuilding on

Well, obviously the only rational takeaway from this is that leftist-perpetrated murders are increasing, and rightist-perpetrated murders are decreasing. It’s clear who the good guys and bad guys are!

  20. Islamists hate America primarily for nationalist reasons. They don’t like US troops on “holy land” and they don’t like US support of Israel.

So it’s fair enough to break them out separately from Left or Right.

But the kind of society they want is actually very right wing.

  21. I see no reason to exclude islamism form other rightwing extremism – as if they’re that different from each other.

  22. Remember: everyone’s nuanced opinions on everything can be summarized and projected onto them in only 1 of 2 flavors.

there’s a couple hard core MAGA families in my neighborhood. they are dens of hell riddled with domestic violence, infidelity, frequent police visits, kids that self harm and abuse animals….. everyone keeps their distance from the kids. no surprise all these mass shooters are from MAGA households. my neighborhood knows first hand what kind of environment these poor kids are born into. MAGA homes are cesspools of abuse that mass produce domestic terrorists.

  24. Wild that this administration claims that the side who is on average AFRAID of guns is also the one doing all the assassinations? And the side with most of the guns are the victims…

  25. I hate that the party colours are reverse in the US compared to the rest of the world.

    Red is left dammit.

  26. Standard_Cobbler_457 on

It’s likely even more skewed since they don’t count all the lynchings of Black people that happen every year as terrorism

  27. Define “politically motivated”

Define the sample data context and the measures

    Define the data validation process
