  1. Basically, the authors argue the US is mostly racing against itself. It’s not that China doesn’t care about AI, they do, but they aren’t in some all out existential race to AGI. China focuses on practical AI applications etc – more thinking of AI as a normal technology, vs AGI. Big tech is incentivized to hype up the China race narrative as much as possible to stave off regulation and get government contracts.

  2. Is anyone surprised that the US would mislead ? The US has come down to two things, power, and profit. The every day workers are going to be pushed into poverty.

  3. In my opinion, AGI needs infrastructure that perhaps they are looking for in the United States, but new programming languages are still needed (transforms are an advance but they are not enough), new programming paradigms, all of this making new hardware necessary. All this for a true AGI but the term has become so ambiguous that they can pass off a complex narrow AI as an AGI. There is still a long way to go to reach what we have in mind as an AGI, which is why China is not fully involved in this but rather in the specialization of AIs.

They got to keep pumping air into the bubble somehow.

I feel like we are getting somewhere closer to the point where the value of AI gets dismystified. The ones involved with it will be on to it by the time it happens though.

  5. No one is racing to AGI. There’s no evidence that AGI can or ever will exist. It’s like saying they’re in a race for time travel.

  6. Sounds like America in the Cold War with defence contractors always exaggerating the threat from the Soviet Union

  7. China knows that this AGI thing is just CEO bullshit to pump their stock and perpetuate the hype. They’ll invest in the real use cases where the current tech make sense. And overtake the US along the way.

  8. The AGI race is just a Wall Street pumping exercise. China and the EU are pursuing real life AI applications instead. AGI is just the race who will grab US shares on Wall Street.

  9. Yeah, America is trying to prevent the AI bubble from bursting because ALL of our top companies valuations are at least partially based on the idea that AI that is actually useful, and not a poorly understood regurgitation machine.

  10. It’s only a race if they are actually moving forward in the right direction.

This is not the road to Oz.

It’s just a shiny new tool that we are figuring out.

AGI is still just a dream.

We have literally capitulated everything to China as far as a world superpower. We will never win any race with China now.
