We moved into a house built in the late 1970’s. Does anyone know what the green canister is, and does it need to be replaced?
Next question is what the green / yellow wire is meant to do, as it’s no longer attached to anything.
    Merci!

    1. The green canister is a valve

The cable should ground something in general. That’s the general colour for cables that ground devices.

    2. Fresh water supply. You can close the valves and empty the pipes that leave the house (garden fossets) to protect them during frost season.

    3. Looks like a pressure reducing valve which is used to, well reduce pressure in the building if your domestic pressure is too high. Don’t touch this unless you know what your doing as it will have to set for the building. If it is in a shared area definitely don’t touch it.

As to replacement they are normally good for a while, I don’t know how often they need replaced but if you’re renting I wouldn’t touch it without agreement of landlord.

As to the green/yellow wiring that looks like it is just earthing. To prevent static electricity building up. Slightly unusual to see there and set up quite unprofessionallu but very normal still. Just needs to connect the pipe work to a metal surface in the building.

Disclaimer I am not a professional, don’t take my word for gospel. Get professional advice if you need it.

    4. In the green cylinder there is a spring that regulates a valve that is there to limit the pressure in your system. It should be set to approximately 3.5 bar. Although the tend to age and have to be replaced or at least serviced after 10 years

    6. Just two notes:

      – Somewhere between the main valve (“Hausanschluss-Absperrhahn/Ventil”) and the pressure reducing valve / regulator (“Druckminderer”; the “Green Box”), there should be a coarse/fine filter (ideally one that can be backflushed without opening/dissassembly – should be cleaned from time to time!).
      – I assume you have a hot water boiler somewhere… in the cold water line to it, there’s a small safety valve (mostly with a blue or green plastic screw cap) that is freely dripping and can be flushed if you turn the cap by 1/8… always make sure (like every 2-3 months) that it still works

If in doubt, ask a plumber to have a look if your central distribution still is OK with regard to safety and hygiene.

AND most importantly, as somebody already pointed out: Get the PE (grounding) fixed (basically it needs to be screwed back in place; but better also have somebody else check PE/grounding installation).

    7. Green thing is a water filter and pressure reducing valve. The filter should be changed every few years. Ask a plumber as it can be a pain if they break or Bauhaus doesn’t stock the correct filter.
The pipe that comes off before the filter/pressure reducer is likely feeding outside taps.
The green/white or yellow is an earth. It should bridge across any plastic sections so all the metal pipes are nicely earthed to the supply pipe coming in. Ask the plumber to check when they change the filter.
