I’m aware that this is just a bill and will require a lot of debate with the rest of the government, but I’m interested to know whether Nawrocki has outlined any further details of his plans. We know that he wants to increase the residency criterion for obtaining Polish citizenship to ten years, but do we know exactly what this will look like?

Because – in fact – there already is a path to citizenship based on ten years of residency in Poland; I was actually planning to apply based on this as early as next year. Currently, if you have lived in Poland for a total of ten years and you currently have permanent residency, then you are eligible to apply for citizenship.

There are faster ways, of course. In theory, spouses of Polish citizens can become eligible after as little as five years of total residency (though in practice it’s exceedingly difficult due to application processing times).

So I’m wondering whether Nawrocki wants people to live in Poland with permanent residency status for ten years (which would require living in Poland for at least 13 years in total). Also, would this apply to EU citizens and non-EU citizens.

Has anyone got any ideas or found any additional information about this?

There’s no plan, it’s the same amendment that PiS proposed last year, simply changing 3 to a 10.

    2. I think you’re right – one would need to have temporary residence for 1-5 years, after this 10 years of permanent. Currently I think it is a bit too easy, considering we start to be one of the best European direction for migration. In current form:

      >Art 1.1, cudzoziemca przebywającego nieprzerwanie na terytorium Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej co najmniej od 3 lat na podstawie zezwolenia na pobyt stały, zezwolenia na pobyt rezydenta długoterminowego Unii Europejskiej lub prawa stałego pobytu, który posiada w Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej stabilne i regularne źródło dochodu oraz tytuł prawny do zajmowania lokalu mieszkalnego;

So 5 + 3 without any shortcuts; if marriage can be shorter, even 2 + 2 probably.

I hope it Goes through citizenship should be a privilege only for few otherwise we will have the same problems as in western countries where they cant legally deport that person since he is a citizen already, i dont mind immigrants working here for better wages or for education but I dont think they should br here forerver id rather have them for some years for them to imprezę their financial status and go home improving their own home land im against brain drain since we poles also suffer from it in the medicine field eith doctors and well immigration isnt a problem Silver for low.birth ratel since immigrants children adopt fertility rate of native population and looking at the test grounds of other countries it causes ethnic tensions, rise of questionable political parties and death of trust societies so I welcome all immigrants wanting to imprezę their life but remember about your own country first since u got your education from there and I personally think u owe them a favour (and also entire world is having a demographic problems expect sadly africa since their population is synthentically over their own food capacity by foreign aid) cheers xo i know my opinion wont be approved by this sub but I think most poles think a like and lets be honest we are on reddit thats mostly liberal and left leaning which is fine but it creates a bubble and u dont touch Grass often lool (neither did I)

    4. It’s fucking atrocious. If I was going through this route I would need to live longer in Poland than I did in Ukraine to become a citizen. With this wait time I would probably start learning Czech or German.

As a Pole, I support this decision. 3 years is next to nothing to get citizenship, lol

Please stop suggesting that Nawrocki has written anything, or made any plans for the country, or will decide independently on anything of consequence whilst in office.

This is not his bill. He is not responsible for any of it. He’s the president.

    7. Only start worrying if this passes through Sejm, which is highly unlikely. Ignore his bullshit bills until then. He only proposes them for media attention and as a distraction to his cruel past

I wonder what I would have to do to get citizenship, I dont live in Poland but my Parents are both polish.

If it will be approved and most likely it will be, then it will be 5+10=15 years minimum to citizenship. So I am already 10 years here paying taxes which will be enough to support two pensioners or two not working people and since I haven’t applied for EU resident earlier I would need more than 10 more years to get citizenship. Looks like it’s time to pack my bags and go elsewhere.

    10. If I legally reside for, say, 8 years without interruption on the basis of temporary residence, and then obtain permanent residence and live another two years. I’m eligible?

    11. These guys are funny. They give money away to „save the demographics” but they cut the only other source of Poles.

    12. Arbitrary metrics aren’t most effective. Income or housing requirement is nice, but if they would really want a better policy and not just an “anti” migration showoff they could add dick-move policies binding people to stay. If you have family where kids have local friends (and they talk 90% Polish because school), you have local business connections and local future plan for your kids you are unlikely to move and actually contribute instead of counting days.

And the country should be more pro-active in who is sought after, who is welcomed and who is not. It’s rather easy to fit-in Ukrainians while in Africa we could for example look at who worked in uranium mines for the French and import selected few with know-how and think about opening uranium excavation here in Poland (which we actually did long time ago for USSR). Like instead of meme-engineers going to UK just invite/bribe actual engineers and companies. USA H1B Visa in the past was engineer-bribe for such cases.

    13. Amazing that it’s few sentences and it’s poorly written anyway – what does “regular” and “stable” income source mean exactly? Is being paid once per year regular as long as it’s regularly once per year? Is it stable? Does changing jobs within those 10 years break that stability? Can you not have a job for a month during those 10 years? Do you only have to have the job and a place to live at the day of application?
It’s a law, it should be written precisely, especially if you have to put 10 years of your life into it.

My understanding is that the plan for citizenship is non-existent. Like a lot of right wing/nationalist politics, there is no plan for citizenship, because no one expects it to pass.

It’s there not because it would be good legislation, but because it’s a good way to whip up the morons into thinking the government isn’t doing enough about migration because they blocked it. It’s a talking point for racists and nationalists to rally around.

10 years ? Japan has similar rules but requires only 5 years. And that’s one isolated country for centuries.

There’s no immigration law in Poland. No government has ever boasted about it. This law is just for publicity, and at best, if it were to come into effect, it would halt virtually all immigration.

The idea itself is also rather pointless, because when it comes to obtaining citizenship, one would probably have to apply both mercantilist and time-based criteria.

    17. Pure insanity. Crazy answer to completely invented problem.

And, believe me, it won’t be proposed again in 2y when PiS comes back to power, because even they understand how bad of an idea it is
