  1. I have an interest in biotechnology and it’s potential applications, and i found this article. I’m curious to have your thoughts on the matter, and what this technology could potentially be used for if it’s perfected.

I wonder if this really qualifies as a breakthrough? Even the article states it’s been done before and they appear to be far off from being able to control the number of resulting chromosomes.
Induced meiosis is already possible and should nearly always yield the right number of chromosomes.

So, does this mean if I can collect skin cells from someone famous – rich, smart, creative, athletic, etc – then I can have their baby. Without them even knowing?

    Still interesting and novel approach.

  4. Hmm, if they actually got it working this process would change a lot of how we view fertility; in women at least. Would basically mean that so long as you have the time and ability to pursue it, you could alway generate an egg from one partner to be fertilized. So naturally this would mean fully biologically related children for male male relationships, but also just any heterosexual relationships where the female’s reproductive health is an issue. Also means a trans woman could be the mother of a child carried by a surrogate too.

I am curious if they could synthesize a sperm cell which would open up another, probably impossible pandora’s box.

  5. I swear I heard of this like 20 years ago or something. Did we just now accomplish it?
