Can’t cut the 50%+ central government mandated spend and everything else has been cut to the bone. Maybe some councils have a bit extra because council tax is a disastrously unbalanced tax, but largely most councils do not.

Ah yes, just what I needed, more tax on my £1200pcm studio apartment half the size of the average hotel room.
Maybe it’ll go towards my front road that’s basically cobblestone, the buses that keep getting contracted to the ever incomplete stagecoach, actual bin collections, or reopening our town’s closed recreational centre.
One can dream.

like every council the cost increases are not under their control, there mandated by law

These amateurs always assume there is some huge pile of “obviously wasted” funds that they can just effortlessly cut and then absorb praise for so doing.
What do they think the previous generations of budget hawks spent their time doing? Twiddling their thumbs?

Love how they came charging into Lancashire Council ready to DOGE the heck out of it and now it’s coming up time to set next year’s budget, are heartily backtracking and have stated:
“The government is asking local government to do ever more and not giving them the resources to do it.”
YOU MEAN LIKE EVERY COUNCIL HAS BEEN SAYING FOR 15 YEARS NOW? IT WAS TRUE?
Colour me surprised

Everyone said before the local elections that statutory requirements meant there wasn’t much to cut for councils. Reform thought they knew better

Oh Kent electorate, what’s that, the consequences of your own actions?
On the plus side, hopefully this’ll inoculate them from supporting Reform in the next GE.

Anyone who ever thought DOGE was ever about saving the gov money is an idiot. It was always about ideological cuts and big data grabs.
Anyone who thinks this is something to be emulated in the UK is an even bigger idiot.

This is the precursor to what a reform government will be, meanwhile Farage will still be a millionaire

So, that £50 Million early loan repayment thing you guys did? Turns out we actually needed that money?
I mean, I’d love to pay off my debts, but if i did it right away I’d still owe money and couldn’t pay my rent next week.
Nice Job KCC. Nice Job.

I guess the residents of Kent will just have to Deal with it.

Hate to be that guy, but given all the inflation rises of recent years, council taxes have actually been effectively cut. Current rises, in reform areas or otherwise, often represent a restoration of previous effective rates.

So the idea that councils are spaffing billions on unjustified spend is bollocks then? Designed to dupe stupid people into voting Reform?
