Three years ago in October, Istanbul University student Burak Başer was expelled from the Credit and Dormitories Institution (KYK) Esenyurt Male Student Dormitory because he delayed paying his dormitory fee for one month.

Since he had no place to stay, he was allowed to stay in the dormitory as a guest student for ten days.

Because he shared his experiences on social media and spoke to the press, and on the third day of his stay, he was once again asked to pack his belongings and leave the dormitory.

Stating that his right to housing was usurped, Başer started a sit-in protest in front of the Esenyurt KYK dormitory in November.

He was arrested on December 19, 2022.

Başer, who has been held in Kandıra Prison for three years, was accused of membership in a terrorist organization and propaganda for staging a sit-in protest in front of the country, on the grounds that he was a member of Dev-Genç. The verdict hearing was held on Thursday, October 9, at the 14th High Criminal Court of Çağlayan Courthouse. People’s Law Office announced that Başer was sentenced to 10 years and 6 months in prison.
