The equatorial regions of Mars are home to unexpectedly enormous layers of ice, and they may have been put there by dramatic volcanic eruptions billions of years ago

  1. This ice would be useful for the first Mars base. Meridiani Planum is where the Opportunity rover landed. It has deep ice deposits from the volcanic ash. Then drill down and melt the ice for water. That area is comparable to California in solar irradiance. So they have readily accessible solar energy, and readily accessible water, and is an easy place to land.
