    >__The complete shutdown of the 3G network in Switzerland, planned for the end of 2025, will have a direct impact on motorists: the automatic emergency call service eCall, which is installed in some models, will no longer work in vehicles that are equipped exclusively with 3G modules. Some older vehicle models cannot be retrofitted to continue using this potentially life-saving service.__

    >With the shutdown of the 3G network in Switzerland by the end of the year, a switch to 4G or 5G is necessary to ensure the functionality of the eCall system. The shutdown of the old networks has a direct impact on integrated emergency communication: only newer vehicles that are compatible with the latest technologies will be able to continue using this system.

    >__eCall – a system designed to save lives__

    >Since 31 March 2018, the emergency call service has been mandatory for passenger cars and lorries registered in Europe and Switzerland. In the event of a serious accident, this system automatically establishes a voice connection between the vehicle occupants and an emergency call centre. The TCS handled more than 2,700 such calls in 2024. In the event of a collision, especially if the airbags are deployed, the vehicle automatically transmits important information: the time and location of the accident, the type of drive system and the number of occupants wearing seat belts. Voice communication enables emergency services to better assess the situation and adapt their rescue measures accordingly. eCall can also be activated manually by a passenger using an SOS button, ensuring that emergency communication is still possible even if the alarm is not triggered automatically.

    >__The year of manufacture of the vehicle is decisive__

    >Models manufactured before 2018 in particular may be affected by the shutdown of the 3G network. Some manufacturers offer the option on their website to check whether a vehicle is affected and whether updates are available to continue using the eCall system. Authorised dealers and workshops can also provide this information. The eCall system can no longer be used in vehicles that are equipped exclusively with 3G modules. No updates are available for some older models. This means that the built-in emergency systems are no longer functional. Retrofit solutions, such as adapters for 12 V sockets (cigarette lighters), are available on the market. However, in order for calls to be forwarded to the emergency numbers stored in the phone, these devices usually need to be connected to a mobile phone. Newer vehicles that are compatible with 4G or 5G can continue to use eCall.

    >__What to do in an emergency__

    >In the event of an accident or emergency, help can be reached by dialling the following emergency numbers: police 117, fire brigade 118, ambulance 144 and general emergency number 112 (valid throughout the European Union). In addition, TCS members can make geolocated emergency calls via the TCS app, which can be used anywhere, for example on the ski slopes or on hiking tours. The app is free of charge and automatically transmits your location when you make a call within Switzerland. This ensures rapid assistance in the event of a breakdown or accident.

    >__Rapid assistance in an emergency__

    >- Via the emergency numbers 144, 118, 117 or 112

    >- The TCS app can be used to make geolocated emergency calls (breakdown/accident assistance).

    >- The app is free and can be used anywhere, even when skiing or hiking. Within Switzerland, your location is automatically transmitted with the emergency call.

such a stupid idea to turn 3g off really

2g i understand, but 3g was still very useful
sometimes it worked better than 4 and 5g, but now that it’s gone, 4 and 5g maybe got a little tiny bit better, but the signal loss is still the same in some areas where 3g helped a lot

Thankfully my car is from 2012 and doesnt have it yet. Turning off FM was already stupid, have to use my phone for navigation ever since.

  4. 4G was introduced in Switzerland in 2012/2013.

eCall started gaining traction in Europe between 2013-2015 and became mandatory for new cars in 2018.

If your car’s eCall doesn’t support 4G, it’s your manufacturer to blame.
