There are not enough drivers speeding on this road.

Perhaps the cost of maintenance ? when it rains and the stone blocks at junctions become loose there’s a continuous need to patch them up

They are just ripping up this whole city and destroying everything that used to be original and authentic. Even the old city is under renovation. It’s really sad to see.

They’re not “traditional” at all, the cobblestone in Batumi’s streets was introduced during Saakashvili’s presidency, there isn’t any tradition for cobblestone streets in Batumi to my knowledge (I could be wrong). They just look old-timey, other than the aesthetics, they fucking suck and they always have in every practical sense.
Because they’re not done properly (over the multiple times they were redone), they are harmful to vehicles. My dad’s car has had many issues with suspension and other things because of the poor cobblestone. I’ve heard many reports from other locals.
Secondly, they’re incredibly loud. I have a house on Rustaveli and sleeping peacefully at night is fucking impossible. You can hear cars coming hundreds of meters away, I haven’t had a quiet night of sleep in over a decade there, it’s abysmal. And no, soundproofing is not a solution, it’s a band-aid because it only works during winter, when the city is mostly empty and much less noisy.
It makes the city sound like shit, it ruins cars, it contributes to even more dust and debris in the air and gives no tangible benefit other than a tacky visual impression of “authenticity” that Saakashvili liked so much.
My next visit is going to be a very happy one, because the streets won’t be ruining my whole ass existence anymore.

Batumi is a tropical region and has heavy rains. The rain would usually gather in between the cracks and flood the road. Nobody enjoys that, so them changing the cobblestone is actually better.

You have to remove the stones before you build a skyscraper.

Those stones seemed stupid and impractical to me. They require constant maintenance and are terrible trip hazards. I would rather not see elderly people tripping and falling because other people want aesthetics. I see people using electric scooters and have used one at one point myself, it’s more difficult and painful to ride on. A smooth rode is best for everyone. Also, it’s much easier to clean an asphalt road than cobblestones.
If you want an aesthetically appealing city, make buildings that aren’t glass and steel, that are stone, marble, etc. made into gothic, baroque, and Hellenistic architecture.
