The next election is going to be such a shit show. Much as I loathe Reform, I think it’s a positive thing the stranglehold of Labour and Conservatives is being broken – there has been far too much complacency in politics. We absolutely do need electoral reform.

It already broke in the last election. A party getting a huge super majority on 30% of the vote is a voting system that does not work. This should have been a warning signal to everyone that things are already going very wrong.
Unfortunately once a party wins they become like a gambling addict chasing the high of a big win, thinking they can do it again even when it’s very obvious they can’t.
So sadly we’re going to see it flip around and we’ll have Farage with a massive super majority based on 30% of the vote giving him carte blanche to enact whatever nutty policies he feels like with no guard rails. I don’t think even this country’s left and centre quite comprehend how bad this could get considering this country has absolutely zero constitutional guard rails.
The country’s constitution is essentially an honour system, a party that doesn’t respect the honour system can do almost whatever it likes and no one can do anything about it as they can change any law they please as long as they keep their MPs in line with a significant enough majority.

What happened to reform wanting to change the electoral system?
Presumably now they are projecting a majority the electrical reform thing has been dropped

In 4 of the last 6 elections, the largest party received 33-37% of the vote. According to the most recent polls, we have 5 parties all polling between 15% and 27%.
Of course first past the post needs to go

Two bombs to throw at the next election.
One is Brexit.
Two is proportional representation.

People are sick of the political and economic status quo that has seen millions struggle for close to twenty years and a string of politicians who have done precisely nothing to address it.
All we’ve seen since the 2008 crash that should have been a huge wakeup for the careless, irresponsible way banks behaved is an even more accelerated race to strip assets and “create value” for shareholders, at the expense of normal people. Rich people have gotten indescribably richer and the poor are squeezed to give up more and more.
All of the mistakes and misconceptions of liberal economics are coming home to roost, and people want change. Real change. Labour have got four years to do something that respects that desire, or they’re as doomed as the Tories.

Let’s skip proportional representation and go straight to sortition

I’ve been saying for about 6 months now that Labour will pass PR before the next election. Cutting the wings off Reform. Allowing a coalition of minority parties to take power. It’s exactly what is going to happen in Wales next year.

Proportional representation really ought to be a much more prominent issue before the next election. Like, *now*.
