Hi all! We are very excited to see the city, going November 7 -13, but the weather looks rainy all week which we are concerned would hamper all activity. We can still get out of most tours booked, should we rethink going and instead stay in Oslo or go somewhere else? Or is this weather forecast not so bad for visibility and can very likely improve?

  1. It is quite likely that the weather will be the same in Oslo. Dress well, and you’ll be fine

  3. The weather will likely only be slightly better in Oslo. Bring good rain gear & dress in layers.

  4. If you are after Northern Lights for your trip, there a few important considerations to make.

The first is that you can’t really account for the weather unless you can go on fairly short notice. And the second is that you can’t account for magnetosphere activity either.

Booking a tour with a company that monitors both of these factors and then takes you to a location is worthwhile, but it’s also important to remember that this is STILL a risk. My personal recommendation would be Northern Horizon tours, specifically if you can ask for your guide to be Harry.

While luck was a big factor still in our trip, Harry and our driver based our location on where the weather was better (we found a field that was being protected by an updraft from the mountains nearby) and what activity was likely to happen and when (sometimes they drive to Finland if they need to, but activity might happen earlier in the night).

All of this to say, you still might not see them – I’ve met many Norwegians who haven’t seen them at all. So it is a tricky trade off between a higher likelihood of seeing them with a tour, balanced against a possibility of spending hundreds or thousands and still not seeing them.

  5. Yr.no show better weatherforcast. Weather forcast more than 5 days ahead cant be trusted. The aurora guides will drive you to a place with no or less clouds (finland) if its clouds above Tromsø.
