Why do we need that much empty space? Space is unbelievably valuable on a spacecraft, and right now we’re essentially giving each astronaut a small apartment’s worth of space.
Where’s the cargo? Where is anything of value? Why are we using 11 starship launches to send a fuckton of empty space to the lunar surface?

That’s a lot of wasted…. everything. A lot of extra surface area for leaks, a lot of extra air that needs to be there, a lot of empty space you could put literally anything else in. I hope they have actual specs to justify the size, because that can’t be fully loaded with everything they need to do what they want to do on the moon’s surface.

These are updated renders of the mockup that’s existed at Starbase for years. NASA astronauts and NASA officials and various others have been inside. The info below confirms these renders and adds to them.
TheSpaceEngineer [u/mcrs987](/user/mcrs987/) did a cutaway and a YT 360º video of the crew quarters, etc, in November 2024. The new official renders show he clearly had info from someone who’d been inside the Starbase nosecone mockup. This was combined with the limited photos that had been released. Thus we can believe the lower deck between the main deck and the cargo bay he shows is accurate. Also, Joe Tegmeyer has been inside and xeeted that the new renders jibe with what he saw back then except the flight deck has been added and the sleeping cubicles rearranged.

Hmm, I know it’s based on the regular Starship and all, but wouldn’t it be more efficient to just shorten the overall height of the HLS so that it doesn’t need as many refueling ships and to save space?

I have a LOT of questions about those legs.
1- it looks like there is hardly any clearance off the surface, so astronauts won’t be able to go under the engines. More importantly, this implies that the ring of thrusters up the top need to be powerful enough and have enough propellant to lift Ship off the surface for at least some altitude (10m? 20m?) before the Raptors fire. Was that always a given? I thought maybe high enough legs plus clearing of rocks etc would make getting off the moon different from landing on it?
2- four legs might be less stable than three?
3- are the legs spread far enough over the surface to prevent Ship from toppling over? Do they have enough ability to compensate for the slope of the regolith? What about boulders, crevices, etc?
4- I had been thinking of two sets of 3 legs: one set of wide ones, that touch down first. Then a second set similar to the ones shown (but a bit higher, and only 3). Those would touch the surface only after the outer legs do a controlled buckle. The outer legs then still provide stability. Wouldn’t something like this be required to provide a robust landing?

I imagine it will be slightly less spacious in real life once they put it all together, and likely add a few necessities, but i’d feel so uneasy being in those chairs.
Like here I am, trapped in an empty bounce castle with a few bolted down lawn chairs, I hope nothing goes wrong.
The entire point is to flex how spacious it is, but i’m sure the astronauts would feel more secure having the chairs’ backs against a wall or something.
