This isn’t the first time the Chinese has influenced one of our universities.

I think maybe these universities should make these people sign something or, even better, find their income elsewhere.

Would love to see the Sheffield Hallam upper-level administrators be compelled to give evidence at a select committee about this. I want to know who they are and what their justification will be for trading academic freedom for student numbers.
The only interesting part of this story is the fact staff were “threatened”. What was the threat? Because a threat of violence is serious, but a threat of “we won’t fund you” is entirely normal, legal, standard etc.
As it is, you can have academic freedom OR you can have foreign regimes funding your academic institutions. You can’t have both. We choose not to fund these institutions…
That’s what happens when you take Chinese money. Do you think there wasn’t going to be a price? They are buying influence.
i love how the uk’s default policy is to just bow down and spread whenever stuff like this happens.
Sure, because UK is an example of human rights across the world and history.
Well I for one am simply shocked that a ~~autocratic dictatorship~~ benevolent people’s utopia would ever participate in such ~~intimidation~~ gentle reeducation of flawed thinking.
