Etimesgut Military Airfield in Ankara is undergoing a comprehensive modernization and transformation process. According to the information obtained, while the operation of the airport will be transferred to the State Airports Authority (DHMİ), the ownership is planned to remain with the General Staff.

Sera İnşaat undertook the construction tender of the project. The works are aimed to be completed before the NATO Summit to be held in Ankara on 7-9 July 2026.

Within the scope of the renovation, the length of the runway will be increased by 500 meters to 3,000 meters and its width will be increased to 60 meters.

It was reported that the necessary expropriation procedures for the runway extension have been completed.

In addition, two large apron areas will be built: 45 to 50 aircraft will be able to park at the same time in these areas measuring 160×400 meters and 113×600 meters.

According to Ali Kıdık from AirportHaber, with the new planning, it is envisaged that all aircraft types, except large-bodied aircraft such as Boeing 747 and Airbus A380, will be able to land and take off in Etimesgut.

The square will be open only to VIP and state protocol aircraft. In this context, the Hall of Honor / State Guesthouse of 2,400 square meters is being built. This building will be used to meet, host and send off heads of state and prime ministers.

After the completion of Etimesgut, it is expected to be Ankara’s new state protocol airport.
