There’s currently a discussion about whether we should build an underground Metro. A street-level tram is much easier to build, more efficient, and far cheaper. But it would require us to reduce car traffic and open up more streets for people. Are we ready for that? Imagine walking through Floriana in this scenario, without all those cars coming and going and the constant smog everywhere. What do you think?

  1. The video looks like the street in Seville near the cathedral. Only difference is that there are multiple underground car parks, and an underground metro under this same street.

You can’t just plonk a tram and magically make all cars disappear. It will take decades and billions for a tram or metro to make a noticeable impact on cars.

How many streets that wide and flat in entire country? 5? 10? What about the rest 99%?

Irrealistic 1000%. The only way to solve the traffic issue is to create an highway system where there are no traffic lights, no concealed exits, no roundabouts, no zebra crossing. The only space is in the air, so…

  4. Reduce car traffic? For this we need to reduce the buildings. The only street wide enough as the one on the attached video, is in front of Valletta.

I think it looks idyllic, imagine being able to bicycle in Malta, that would be awesome! But this is a distant distant dream.

1 person per car, traffic jams on the motorways as far as the eye can see, from monday to sunday, and polluted air as a consequence.

Not sure what the solution is, but i think everyone can agree that a solution needs to be found.

  6. Malta simply needs much more motorbikes/scooters. If 20% of people would ride a 2 wheels it would be a considerable improvement at zero cost. All it takes is a much bigger license for cars, proportionate to their physical size.

Bicycles are welcome ofc but let’s be realistic … impractical (cause of heat) or impossible (cause of distance) for a very good chunk of people.

On a personal note, what you picture as nice in the video for me is hell. Personal preference, clearly.
