In 2024, total pharmaceutical spending amounted to 37.2 billion euros (+2.8% compared to 2023)of which 72% is reimbursed by the National Health Service (NHS). In fact, public pharmaceutical spending stood at 26.8 billion euros, up compared to 2023 (+7.7%).

As regards drug prices, if we consider the overall market, including drugs supplied both locally and in hospitals, Italy has prices lower than Belgium (+75.8%), Germany (+51.9%), Austria (+42.0%), Sweden (+29.5%), Great Britain (+4.2%), Spain (+3.5%), while in France (-10.6%), Poland (-30.4%) and Portugal (-37.6%) prices are lower, but they are countries in which there is a much lower availability of products than those accessible in Italy. Average European prices are 62.5% higher than those applied in Italy.

In 2024 in Italy, 1,895 doses of medicines were consumed per 1,000 inhabitants per day, i.e. each citizen, including children, took approximately 1.9 doses of the drug. 70.8% is paid by the NHS and the remaining 29.2% is purchased privately. As regards public and private local assistance, almost 2 billion packs were dispensed, a slight decrease compared to 2023.

Drugs in pediatric age: anti-infectives are the most used, prescriptions of psychotropic drugs increase

Since 2016, both the prevalence of use and consumption of psychotropic drugs have more than doubled. Although they still remain at low levels, they have gone from 20.6 packs per 1,000 children (prevalence of 0.26%) in 2016 to 59.3 packs per 1,000 children (prevalence of 0.57%) in 2024. These are mainly antipsychotics, antidepressants and ADHD drugs.

The use of psychotropic drugs shows an increasing trend by age, reaching the maximum in the 12-17 year age group, in which there is a consumption of 129.1 packs per 1000 and a prevalence of 1.17%. A growing trend, in line with the results of other published international epidemiological studies, which highlight a general trend of increasing prescription rates of these medicines in all countries around the world, especially following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Also for 2024, the Report confirms a trend of spending and consumption increasing with age. In the elderly population, the average expenditure per user amounts to 570.2 euros (621.6 in males and 529.5 in females), slightly increasing compared to 2023 (+1.2%). As many as 97.4% of elderly people received at least one drug prescription during the year. On average it reaches over 3.4 doses per day, men take more than women.

    Non è possibile che la media Europea sia del 62,5% superiore se nessuna delle 4 nazioni più grandi, Germania (+51,9%) Spagna (+3,5%) Gran Bretagna (+4,2%) Francia (‐10,6%), supera (ma neanche va vicina) a quel valore.

    Di primo acchito ho subito giustificato il costo minore riportato in Italia al fatto che siamo grandi produttori e esportatori di farmaci e abbiamo quindi una grande disponibilità degli stessi. Quindi questa frase l’ho dovuta rileggere più volte cercando di darle un senso… Come può una minore disponibilità portare a prezzi inferiori?

    Sembrerebbe riferirsi al fatto che in quei paesi non utilizzano, per mancanza di disponibilità, dei farmaci costosi a cui noi invece ricorriamo. Ma a questo punto se il confronto viene fatto tra farmaci diversi tra loro che senso ha il numero riportato? Boh.
