The Bundesrat is raising the age of Zivilschutz and now they have to do 40 years. How do you guys feel about this?

I’m quite sceptical and think, they should try to revert it. Maybe this is a sign that the service citoyen is needed?

  1. The federal council continues to try to make the alternative to the army worse instead of understanding that the army is not interesting (and also doesn’t need more people).

  2. Can we go towards an incentive Idk like lighter taxes for 20 years to do a “service citoyen” instead of being forced to ?

as someone who does Zivilschutz. It is completely useless and should be scrapped entirely.

  5. As someone who is crazy enough to prolong the own “career” in civil protection (the Caretaker branch).
It is something purposeful to do if we get the ok to work with civilians or actually are able to do something useful.
The thing i dislike is, teaching unmotivated people concept of things they probably never have to use, just so we have something to “do”.

More experience and more purposeful tasks would be nice.
And about the people, yup, a lot don’t want to come to civil protection (i don’t blame them), mainly cause of motivation and the tasks.
Getting the age up to 40… not sure how good that outcome will be.
But then also, most civil protection regions have an organisation comitee where no one ever was in civil protection, not able to see and understand the possibilities, only focusing on “cheaper” more “packed” theoretical missions.

I find the arguments against the Service Citoyen initiative quite hilarious. On the one hand our government constantly complains about there not being enough people in the Zivilschutz and the Army yet on the other hand they oppose the initiative because they claim it would lead to too many people serving. Also, even though they support mandatory military service for men, they use the very same arguments opponents of conscription use to argue against the initiative. I.e. stuff like “the people serving would be missing in private companies which hurts the economy”, something that’s already the case for the current system of conscription. Military service (or a civilian alternative) should either be mandatory for everyone regardless of gender or for no one! Until that’s the case, we will never achieve true equality.

Something that should be made clear: the duration in terms of years is *unchanged*. It was already at 14 years in the ordinance, now IIRC it’s the same but in the law itself. The change in the upper limit only affects those that got into Zivilschutz super late due to becoming Swiss closer to thirty.

EDIT: to make it super explicit, this changes nothing for those who began Zivilschutz in their early twenties.

Not enough in my opinion, but a step into the right direction. Only a democratic soldier-citizen is an emancipated citizen – women and disabled men of course excluced from this equation. It is about the will to defend our sovereignty and democracy, and about solidarity. Democracy means not only the right to vote but also the responsibility to defend it.

Definiered klar, was dUfgabe sind. Dänn säged ihr, was de Sollbestand vode Lüt sött sii. Und dänn mached ihr glichi Recht und Pflichte für all (inkl. Fraue). Isch das so verdammt schwierig?

  10. Is it really true that there aren’t enough people? I see the purpose for true emergencies, but nearly every experience from ZS that members talk about (even the ones who really enjoyed it) was routine maintenance activities. Does it really require raising a militia to maintain hiking paths or deliver food to the elderly?

  11. I finished my service 3-4 years ago and was discharged. Will I be drafted again now? 💀 I’m 36.

  12. Oh yes, these famous very motivated for a civil service 35 years old men with families and careers. Both mandatory army and civil service are such a big waste of money and time.
