      Norway on Wednesday ruled out serving as the sole guarantor for a proposed European Union loan to Ukraine using frozen Russian assets, though officials said Oslo may consider contributing depending on the final mechanism Brussels adopts.

      Some Norwegian economists have argued that Norway, Western Europe’s largest oil and gas exporter, should act as guarantor for the loan, citing the country’s estimated €109 billion in extra revenue from soaring gas prices since the war began.

      The idea has gained traction among several Norwegian and foreign politicians, diplomats, and commentators.

      However, Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg dismissed suggestions that Norway could underwrite the entire loan.

      “It would be wrong to rule out anything before we’ve even seen the proposal, but some ideas have circulated under which Norway would guarantee the entire amount… That is out of the question,” Stoltenberg told public broadcaster NRK from Brussels, where he was meeting European counterparts.

      He added that Oslo’s potential involvement would depend on the EU’s final proposal, noting that “discussions are still ongoing within the Union.”

      I’m all for helping Ukraine, but Norway should not be the only guarantor; we should however be part of several guarantors, should the opportunity present itself.

      This news was as much an «we’re open to guaranteeing with others» as it was «we won’t guarantee all of this alone», so not as bad news as it’s made out to be.

      If a few nations, perhaps Germany, the Netherlands, the UK or other Nordics participate, I’m sure Norway would be open to shoulder a sizeable chunk of it.

      Seems wild to ask a single country to do this, let alone a non-EU country.
      Perhaps the conspiracy that the EU wants Norway for its bank accounts might not be entirely unfounded.

      Best to assign a guarantee of the 100+Billion in war profits and let the eu countries guarantee the remaining funds. Norway surely does not wish to profit from Russian aggression towards Europe?

      The framing on this reads like coercive propaganda. Norway has given a much larger contribution of money and weapons to Ukraine than almost any nation per capita.

      The moment you become a guarantor to a loan to Ukraine is the moment you have promised multi-generational poverty to your citizens.

      Look at the UK.

      Cost of paying for a foreign state (see also: billions sent to Israel).

      Norway is wise not to sign shit like this.

      Im not norwegian by birth. But why should Norway do that? And do you norwegian see those norwegian economists + politicians as traitors? In my homeland, it happens like that.

      I can think of 14 EU nations that are war profiteering by buying cheap russian petroleum even now, who should be asked to contribute.

      Why do we need a guarantor? Are we like supposed to pay this money back to russia at some point? Fuck that

      Give UA the money and say no if russia ask for it back.
