The US is seeing a quiet but tragic surge in suicides among young children: for children aged 8-12 years old, the suicide rate has tripled since the 2000s. Across all races, all regions, and both sexes, the child suicide rate has increased. The overwhelming majority of child suicides are hangings.
Here is the figure in question from the JAMA article.

I am very curious about the area to the left of this, because it looks like it was on a decline into the recent rise.

Not beautiful, this is horrifying. The problem is that there’s no message of hope for the future in the zeitgeist; doomerism is what sells adds, or drives clicks, or maxes engagement, or whatever.

I hate these kinds of phrasing where they say “rates tripled” but the rates were infinitesimal to start with. Tripled from 3 per 1,000,000 to 9 per 1,000,000, or from 0.0003% to 0.0009%, which isn’t great, but when then numbers are that small, it doesn’t take much to push them up.

Jesus fucking Christ, why and how are 8-12 year olds killing themselves, there is a much deeper issue at play here holy fuck that’s terrifying.

As someone who wanted to die when I was in the fourth grade but had no idea there was a word for it, this hits pretty hard

I would be interested in seeing those stats per state and compared with education rankings / mental health support rankings (*if that’s a real available data set, haven’t looked yet*).

An ever darker thought:
How sure are we that these are actual suicides and not ‘suicides’ staged by a family member?
