  1. Relax guys, it’s just super flu, not even mega or hyper flu.

I’ll worry when it gets to giga flu or ultra flu.

  2. I’ve heard so many people this week telling me the flu is made up. It can’t kill you and the vaccines are even worse

  3. It will be the story of the boy who cried wolf. The NHS is reported to be in crisis every year.

It does seem bad this year per the numbers – but we have heard it every year so won’t take measures to reduce the spread. A big part of the problem this year seems to be the vaccine doesn’t help much against the new strain so people with flu get much sicker that they would do normally.

  4. I’ve had really bad flu a few times in my life, but I’ve never once gone near a hospital with it.

Are these staggering numbers of hospital admissions all the extra vulnerable, those with a risk to life etc??

I just can’t get my head around that many people per day going to hospital with the flu and needing to sit in a ward until they’re better! Presumably they turn away those who don’t need to be there, so how bad is this thing that they’re admitting that many people per day?

I’ve read enough virus focused apocalyptic ebooks recently to know this is the end of the world. And I for one welcome it as it’d solve a lot of my worries over career, cost of living, pension, etc.

  7. Seeing all these stories recently I decided to wear a mask on the train and London tube for one of my rare site visits for work. I got some proper dirty looks from others for wearing a surgical mask like people did during Covid. No wonder shit spreads so fast in the UK when people look at you like you’re crazy for taking basic steps to protect yourself from getting ill.

  8. My toddler and I have just had the flu and it was a nasty one. It sent one of the kids from his daycare to hospital, and others needed antibiotics. Get the jab if you can.

My probably wrong understanding of the viral biology is as follows:

There are two proteins on the outside of the flu virus whose names start with H and N— I don’t remember their full names; they don’t really matter in this context.

The flu vaccine targets these proteins, but flu is separated into different categories depending on structure. H1N1 is one that we see a lot; I think this is H2N3?

The vaccine does have protection against H2N3 in general— but this is a new strain of it which is a bit better at evading it. But because it’s still H2N3 the vaccine is still a bit effective— I think it’s more the difference between a rusty key fitting in the “kill the virus” lock, and the key just not fitting at all?

Off work today and need to do a bit of shopping. Going to mask up for the first time in a while, would rather not be unwell over Xmas if I can avoid it.

NHS will struggle, as people will inundate it and feel violated when they can’t be made better.
The susceptable will perish about 9k on average
So mask up and get ya jabs.
    Same old same old really.

Poison-type Pokémon seem to be all the rage at this time of year.

Everywhere I go, I can hear Koffing and Weezing.

  13. I have this flu and it sucks. Hard.

This flu has knocked me out. Whenever I think I’m starting to improve my head starts to explode. I’ve been dealing with it for the last week and I’m now maybe starting to feel better. I even tested for Covid just to be sure, it’s that bad.

  14. Got my flu and covid booster.

Had a terrible cold or flu and couple weeks ago, wiped out people at work. Still went into work because we dont get paid any sick leave. But yeah, it was rough. Id still rather have that again than anything that gives me a cough cold. Not sure if it was this super flu I had, hopefully it was.

Bloody glad I had my flu jab. I had the flu once, I was in bed for 3 weeks, hallucinating and drifting in and out of consciousness and looked like a walking skeleton when I recovered. And I was relatively fit and healthy then.

It’s true my elder parents plus me have got it with my mother spending days in the hospital

  17. Never got the flu jab before this year – I did this year because I started working in healthcare and I thought why not. I got the flu about a week ago and it was mild as anything – minor headache and a cough. My coworker who didn’t have the jab was practically bedridden.

Its definitely a suoper flu. My grandson whos 11 brought it in from school. It kept him off school for a week, laid up the whole house as we got it too, and my husband ended up in hospital with it. I almost went in too, but I had to look after my grandson. Almost 3 weeks later we’re all starting to feel better, but we’re all left with what I would call a head cold, blocked ears, head full of cotton wool, sore sinus, and a cough.

Honestly its the worse flu Ive had since the 80s. I dont wish it on anyone. And if I get it again, I’m definitely going to A&E.

  19. I prefer to call it harsh flu, given it does seem a little worse than usual, but I’m not sensationalist. It just seems like a noticeably harsher than average flu, but nothing too crazy.

Oh my god im so sick of the yearly death knell. Every year without fail, “FLUUUUU!!! WE’RE ALL GONNA DIEEEE!!!”

    Bore off

Signed a vulnerable autoimmune patient who takes the necessary precautions and carries on living my bloody life..

Had it first at the start of November, just felt completely fucked for the first week (head banging, exhausted), then it turned into runny nose and then a serious cough which lasted for about 3/4 weeks.

Even now after 6 weeks I’ve still abit of a cough and chest pain (also abdominal pain likely from the constant coughing for weeks straining ab muscles). Definitely the worst I’ve had since Covid in 2021.
