Sadly, my guess is this always been far more prevalent in the past, it’s just that more victims are brave enough to now come forward and – crucially – being listened to…

Not a surge in offences. A “surge” in scrutiny. Police have always harboured rapists and paedophiles.

Kinda surprised there aren’t protests happening outside police stations over this considering some of these cases have people abusing their power as a police officer to engage in these crimes.
Edit: of all the things, why in the world is this getting downvoted?

Surge in police sex offenders *getting caught*, where previously they’d be covered up by their colleagues.

Every time you hear about people being murdered it’s terrifying, but Sarah’s story for some reason has haunted me so much since. I think because she honestly stood no chance, anyone would have gotten in the car when they were told it was an officer, I would never have questioned that authority.
So this is truly not the headline I wanted to see, it’s unbelievably frightening.

Can’t believe some officers just decide to abuse their power like this. The scumbags want locking up for a long time.

So from 2022, out of over 145,000 officers and over 307,000 staff, about 50 were convicted of sex crimes. This lower than most if not all other professions. I accept that Policing should be held to a higher standard. The fact these have been highlighted and dealt with is good.
The amount of abuse in the NHS, schools, is far worse but the impact of an officer doing it is seen as worse because we rightly hold them to a high standard.
This is hardly a mass epidemic, With these numbers there is a **0.016286645%** chance of this occurring. The media is creating panic for no real reason. Again, no one is saying more should not be done.

A surge in offences not being brushed under the carpet.

Just an interesting statistic to help put this in perspective..
If you put 10,000 cops and police staff in a room, on average 5.8 of them would be convicted of an offence annually, whether that’s violent, traffic, sexual etc.
If you put 10,000 of the general population in a room on average 180 of them would have been convicted annually.
The police are far from perfect, unfortunately we don’t live in a utopia and that will never happen, they are on average far better than the wider population though.
