It seems they are really serious about this 2038 Olympics things. I am curious to know what you think. It says that it will be financed through private funds for 82% for it still leaves 18% to be covered by taxpayers. Also, who will cover it if it goes over budget ? Not private funds but likely public ones. A referendum should be held on whether Swiss people do or do not want the Olympics cause I am not a big fan of the idea when we are actively cutting into social security.

If we have snow in 2038 lol
Personally the absolute condition is “no billion-worth stuff”. I don’t want a Milano situation.
No thank you. Utter waste of money! Despite the strong Frank nobody seems to complain of lack in tourists. So no pricey advertising needed.
Its will always be like this… “private finances XY”.. then it doesn’t work out and a big gap is left AFTER the games, and the government has to cover the debt. They always do their math to optimistically because they know once the event is done, there is nothing you can do about it. Screw those corrupt organisations. Fifa, Uefa and Olympia.
bold to assume that the world won’t be a nuclear wasteland by 2038
I hope we dont get it
yes, sport events are cool. The Womens Euros was a blast.
I think such events are cool and should be supported. We spend millions on culture things, that only a few people enjoy. The olympic Games will be enjoyed by a majority of people.
Will never happen. This will go to a vote and people will only see the costs.
I don’t think that it’s likely that such an endeavour would be able to run massively over budget. Much of the infrastructure already exists — Switzerland is already hosting many winter sports events, especially in skiing. This isn’t a Qatar 2022 situation where everything needs to be newly built, which would increase such a risk by quite a bit I imagine.
Yes, there’d probably be a need to construct an Olympic village, but IIRC London has transformed theirs into apartments and one could plan the same here.
I believe this project is entirely doable.
As a sidenote: People like you, OP, who have legitimate opinions about the costs of hosting large events are part of the reason why autocracies are so often the hosts, for they don’t have to give a fuck about broad popular support for the project. But perhaps we should see this bid as one against one of a sportswashing autocratic nation?
2038? That is way in the future man… oh wait, are we already closer to 2050 than to 2000? Damn…
So we’ve got Lausanne, the most indebted municipality per capita in Switzerland (but hey, the mayor totally deserved his recent raise), and Crans Montana, who might very well become even more indebted than Lausanne in the near future… sounds like a recipe for the usual Olympic Games aftermath success story.
In the past, Residents in regions like Graubünden (St. Moritz and Davos) have voted against bids (for 2022 and 2026) due to concerns that massive construction, artificial snow-making, and increased traffic would permanently damage the Alpine environment. They were right, and hope their stand wont Change.
IMHO the whole olympic game is a corrupt Business.
Tax the IOC, FIFA and UEFA like regular for profit companies and we can use those proceeds to fund 2038…
