    1. The most ridiculous statement recently made by Trump is that NATO should ensure that Greenland becomes American. It seems that this president does not realize that he himself is the leader of NATO and that, if he gets his way, this will mean the end of the alliance.

Whatever Trump’s motives may be, European NATO members must put a stop to his imperialism. Such a NATO leader is useless, so the now former European allies must threaten to kick America out of NATO. I constantly hear the mantra that “we cannot do without America.” Nonsense. It is a matter of will.

American troops can easily be replaced by European ones. French and British nuclear weapons can take over the Americans’ nuclear role. With the help of the Ukrainian Delta system linked to European satellite systems, we can also carry out major military operations ourselves. We can now develop advanced long-range weapons together with Ukraine. The EU’s ReArm Europe program is gaining momentum. In a few years, the most important gaps in European defense will be closed.

If America is kicked out of NATO, the damage to its position of power in the world will be disastrous. Ramstein Air Base and the headquarters in Stuttgart, for example, are essential for American operations in Africa and the Middle East. Drones are controlled from Ramstein all over the world. Moreover, repatriating and relocating American troops—80,000 to 100,000 soldiers and their families—and dismantling bases would be prohibitively expensive, even for the Americans.

If Greenland is taken over and Trump goes further, for example by setting his sights on the militarily even more relevant Norwegian Spitsbergen, then we must hit America economically.

The ‘nuclear option’ that the EU can apply is the anti-coercion instrument with which America can be denied access to the European integrated market in whole or in part. Less damaging are targeted sanctions, high import duties on American products, entry bans for American politicians and industrial leaders, a sharp reduction in dollar transactions, ‘buy European’ legislation, tackling American tech companies through the Digital Services Act and the Digital Market Act, and rapidly becoming less dependent on American LNG. The list is endless.

Trump constantly claims that he ‘holds all the cards’. But in his overconfidence, he overlooks the power of Europe, or rather the EU. Provided that European countries become aware of their power and are willing to use it. Military steps are already being taken in response to the Russian threat. Economically, Europe can speak with one voice when it comes to trade policy. Because then it is Brussels’ turn to act.

Jean Claude Juncker, hailing from tiny Luxembourg, managed to put Trump in his place in 2018 as President of the European Commission when Trump announced tariffs on European cars.

European leaders must start speaking Juncker’s language of power. No more “deals,” because for Trump that is a euphemism for capitulation. So no negotiations, but say no to American land grabbing and make it clear to Trump what price he will have to pay for his aggression. We are paying a high price for putting pressure on him, but if we give Trump his way, we will ultimately pay an even higher price.

lol this article is advocating for something Russia has aimed for since the end of ww2 Europe would be screwed if the Americans were kicked out of nato and packed their bags

Trump has been damaging the strategic interests of his allies for quite a while now, with his pandering to putin, his threats of annexation and his cancelling of international treaties.
The US were the backbone of NATO, and i am sure many american service men served with honour. We should be grateful for their help and protection, but unfortunately, you cannot trust a military if you cannot trust its commander. The US shouls shape up or get out.

This makes no sense. This is what Trump wants. This is what Putin wants. NATO is a red line for many republicans even if they are no longer our ally’s. There would be zero strategy to doing this.

*Cant read Dutch. Just headline. Did not ready article as a result.

Some valid points below worth considering.

    5. Eh. If they do attack Greenland, or any other part of the EU or any NATO state, they’ve de facto removed themselves. Until then, need not make a certainty of something perhaps avoidable by a very lucky series of strokes, falls, and the passage of time.

    6. By virtue of their intelligence, carrier groups, air dominance and logistics, the US basically “is” NATO.

Kicking them out, while there isn’t a clear reason for doing, so is shortsighted and stupid.

    7. Why? They’re already about to do that themselves with the invasion into another country, so there’s no reason to preemptively kick them out and give them a reason to pretend like they’re a victim of something again.

    8. Stupid person says Stupid thing. News at ten…

[correction = ~18%] of nato funded assets are american, NATO doesn’t really exist without the US. There will be no ‘NATO’ to have.

    9. Be careful what you wish for.

Three years of turmoil is nothing compared to generations of conflict

I believe his arguments are as follows: the US will not defend the EU any longer (enemies might bet on this), hence having the US in Nato gives a false sense of security and makes the EU easy to blackmail/extort. He basically says it is rather a formality, Nato is already dead. It is rather extreme, let’s hope it is not necessary

    11. We need to differentiate between the ideas coming straight from DJT and his advisers and then the fact that many members of congress AND most Americans are against the takeover. It would be stupid to alienate the entire US in this matter. Let us rather hope that this will make a rift within the GOP. That is the only hope for the American and European future that a power shift will happen around the psychotic administration.

    12. you can’t throw anyone out of nato, but you can leave if you want. so go ahead and leave if you want to be out of the alliance with the USA.

    13. Note that any agreement that the USA has previously made , can only be regarded as “ notional “ with the present maladministration . Act before Donny has another “ thinking” minute.
Europe , together with Canada must stand united against the USA 🇺🇸 with its current leadership and aggressive style . Remember ICE in Greenland is frozen water , not vigilantes operating as government bounty hunters

    14. I bet putin didnt have this on his bingo card for 2026, he must feel like he’s winning the lottery every week

Even if we’d agree: there is no mechanism within the statutes to do so. A member can withdraw, which is a process that takes about a year, but to remove a member, that’s simply not possible, at least not within the existing legal framework.

    16. RobotSchlong10 on

Don’t worry, they’ll kick themselves out when they invade Greenland under Putin’s orders (related indirectly via Trump).

    17. lars_rosenberg on

      Unfortunately it’s not that easy.

EU military organizations rely on a lot of American equipment and software. It would require years of planning to become independent and doing that with Trump in office would just increase the tension, something I doubt any politician currently in office (with enough power) has the guts to do. Tbh I think most of them just hope Trump loses the midterm elections and is impeached.

    18. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t it the months before the US election that NATO was scrambling to put safeguards in place so US couldn’t leave NATO? Kicking them out would be giving trump exactly what he wanted.

    19. thrownkitchensink on

prof. de Wijk is clearer then usual. I agree. Europe needs to make clear and blunt statements to the US regarding Alaska. We are very willing to cooperate in NATO but will not stand for invasions on NATO territory. Clear statements on the effects of such acts are probably the only thing that will stop the current Trump administration. Most would realize that pushing partners in Europe away has a huge cost in it selves for the US but that logic seems abandoned in Washington.

Declaring US military personnel unwelcome on EU soil would be a clear signal. Not as a decision now but as a announced effect of interference in Greenland.

The strategic effect of deterrence through the tripwire of US presence has already deterred anyway. Does Russia still believe the tripwire would trigger a response? Do we in Europe?

An even bigger “nuclear”option would be for the EU to move away from the dollar as international reserve currency. That would align EU with BRICS countries on that point and it would make refinancing US debt a problem.

When it comes to powerplay and spheres of influence we in Europe do not have all the cards. But neither does the US. It’s an international interdependent world where actions have consequences.

    20. Noooo. Let Trump try and invade Greenland first. He’ll piss off his own Republicans in Congress and might end up getting impeached and removed from office.
